Arkansas Big Bass Bonanza Fishing Tournament Set for June 22-24

LITTLE ROCK — Registration is now open for the Arkansas Big Bass Bonanza, the country’s largest amateur big bass tournament, which returns to the Natural State for an eighth consecutive year, June 22-24.

Fishing enthusiasts can register online at www.arkansasbigbass.com

The angler who lands the largest fish in the three-day tournament will take home $100,000, with other cash prizes available throughout the weekend. Approximately 3,000 fishermen are expected to compete in the event.

Total prize money will be determined by the total number of registrants in the tournament. In 2006, tournament officials distributed nearly $275,000 in total prizes.

The tournament begins at 6 a.m. sharp on all three days, with the first hourly weigh-in at 8 a.m. and subsequent weigh-ins at the top of each hour until the final 1 p.m. weigh-in. Cash prizes will be awarded for the biggest fish in each pool each hour.

Pro-Day Baseball

The Pro-Day Baseball Arkansas high school showcase will take place on Thursday, June 14 at Taylor Memorial Field in Pine Bluff from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The showcase is an opportunity for high school players to show their talents in front of professional scouts and collegiate coaches. The players will be evaluated in all areas from hitting, fielding, arm strength, arm accuracy, running, base running and pitching. These evaluation cards will be kept on file to monitor a player’s progress throughout their high school career. Pro-Day, which was founded by Pine Bluff native Jeff Gross in 1989, will also send these cards to three colleges of the player’s choice.

Dumas High football camp

Dumas head coach Mark Courtney has announced plans Tuesday for a three-day Bobcat Football Camp at Dumas High School on June 5, 6 and 7.

The day camp, for players ages 9-12, will run from 8:30 to 11 a.m. and there is a $40 fee that includes a $10 deposit.

Athletes wishing to register should contact Brad Stringer at 870-866-2805 or Jimmy Locke at 870-377-1023 before May 16 to pay the $10 deposit and give their t-shirt size.

Deposits may also be paid to Bubba Hudson at the Dumas Desha County Farm Bureau office.

Courtney said the camp will focus on football fundamentals and will include 7-on-7 tournaments all three days, with participants split into teams based on the number of those attending.

Courtney, his staff and Bobcat football players will work with the athletes.

UAM basketball camps

University of Arkansas at Monticello head men’s basketball coach Mike Newell and head women’s basketball coach Chris Ratcliff will hold summer campus at Steelman Fieldhouse on the UAM campus.

Ratcliff’s camp for girls in grades K-7 will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on June 18-20, while the camp for girls in grades 8-12 will be held on the same dates from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The Cotton Blossoms’ camp tuition is $55 and includes a free camp t-shirt. Coach Newell’s camp will be held in two sessions, with both camps for boys and girls ages 7-18. Session I will be held June 21-23, with Session II held August 2-4. Tuition for Coach Newell’s camp is $95. For more information, call 870-460-1058.

UAM baseball & softball camps

University of Arkansas at Monticello head baseball coach Ron Hill and head softball coach Alvy Early will hold summer camps on the UAM campus. Hill’s camp for boys ages 6-16 will be held June 7-8 at Weevil Field on the UAM campus. Camp tuition is $60 and includes a t-shirt. Early’s camp is for girls ages 6-18 will be held July 10-12 at Blossoms Field on the UAM campus. Camp tuition is $75 and includes a t-shirt. For more information, call 870-460-1058.

Invitational Four Ball golf tournament

The 11th annual Four-Ball Golf Tournament will take place June 9-10 at Harbor Oaks Golf Club in Pine Bluff.

The tournament is open to 64 two-man teams on a first-come, first-serve basis and approximately $1,000 in prize money will be up for grabs.

The entry fee is $280 per team and includes carts, greens fees and lunch for both days of the tournament, a practice round and happy hour reception on June 8 and a dinner reception following the conclusion of the tournament.

The field will be divided into flights of eight after the first round and the championship flight will consist of the eight lowest scores from the first round. There will also be closest to the hole, long drive and most accurate drive competitions and a team shootout.

The minimum age for all contestants is 21.

Sixth annual King of South Arkansas softball tournament

Aerojet is sponsoring the sixth annual King of South Arkansas softball tournament June 22-23 at the Fordyce Softball Complex. All proceeds will go to support the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

The tournament is for men’s Class D teams and below with an entry fee of $150 per team. A $50 deposit is required by June 18.

3-on-3 hoop festival

The Pine Bluff Armadillos of the New World Professional Basketball League and the Pines Mall will host the first annual 3-on-3 hoop festival June 23 in the parking lot of the Pines Mall.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. and the tournament will start at 9 a.m. Registration forms can be picked up at the Armadillos’ headquarters located at 2901 Pines Mall Drive Suite 522.

The registration deadline is June 15 and registration fees are as follows: Ages 3+ — $100, ages 19-30 — $100, ages 16-18 — $50, ages 12-16 — $35, ages 8-11 — $25, ages 6-8 — $25.

H&K Basketball Officials Camp

The H&K Basketball Officials Camp will be held June 25 through June 28 at Sheridan High School’s gymnasium.

The cost is $75 per person.

Bill Garman Memorial Golf Tourney

The Area Agency on Aging of Southeast Arkansas will host the Bill Garman Memorial Golf Tournament on Monday, July 16 at the Pine Bluff Country Club.

Warm-up and registration begin at 11:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 1 p.m.

The entry fee is $75 per person or $300 per four-person teeam. It includes 18 holes of golf, carts, green fees, practice balls, putting contest, $500 drive for the money, refreshments on/off the course and the “Big Souther BBQ Buffet” following the round of golf.

There will be four flights with prizes awarded to the first and second finishers in each flight. Early registration is encouraged to secure a team slot.

The tournament was held on July 18, 1994 and was dedicated in memory of Bill Garman, who was the pharmacy consultant for the Area Agency Home Care Programs and served as president of the Professional Hospice Utilization Review Committee for the Agency until his death in June of 1994. The tournament was renamed in Bill’s memory in 1995 and 2007 marks the 13th year of the event.
