Redfield City Council to discuss financial future

REDFIELD — The Redfield City Council will have a special meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday to discuss particulars on a proposed sales tax along with funding needs of the Redfield Athletic Association.

In a Tuesday night regular session, the council decided a special meeting is needed to determine spending priorities on the proposed 1-cent sales tax, which is projected to generate about $180,000 annually. Currently, plans are that the funds would support enhancements to the city’s streets, police department and parks.

The council voted unanimously to use city monies to purchase dirt needed by the athletic group to upgrade several baseball fields, and will consider providing additional assistance to the organization in Thursday’s special meeting.

Meanwhile on Tuesday night, the council also gave a unanimous nod to a resolution authorizing Mayor George Sanders to proceed with gathering information needed to possibly initiate renovations or replacement construction at a proposed new city hall location.

The city previously purchased a former business building of approximately 5,000 square feet. The property is located adjacent to Arkansas 365 in Redfield’s primary commercial area.

The council also endorsed a partial ban on pit bulldogs. Aldermen Chris Carter and Bill Elliott opposed the measure.

The ban supplements a previous ordinance on “control of vicious animals.” Pit bulls registered as American Kennel Club show dogs are exempt from the ban.

A “grandfather” clause will allow Redfield residents who already own non-show dog pit bulls to keep the dogs if they register the dogs with Redfield Animal Control within the next 30 days.

Failure to register a pit bull may result in the city’s seizure of the dog, along with a $100 “reclaim fee” and the dog’s immediate removal from the city.
