BY THE COMMERCIAL STAFF
Monday, October 22, 2007 10:02 AM CDT

The NAACP plans its annual banquet and a haunted house opens at White Hall.

The Pine Bluff Branch of the NAACP will hold its 16th annual Dove Freedom Fund Banquet at 7 p.m. Friday at the Pine Bluff Convention Center.

The featured speaker will be Andrea Young, an attorney and the daughter of the former mayor of Atlanta, Andrew Young.

The VIP reception will be held at 6 p.m. Friday in the Jefferson Room of the Royal Arkansas hotel. A silent auction begins at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets for the event are on sale through Thursday at the Pine bluff Convention Center. For more information, contact Wanda V. Neal at 536-3141, event coordinator.

At White Hall, the White Hall Lions Club is staging its Haunted House with tours scheduled at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Oct. 30 and 31.

A guide at the Haunted House takes a group of participants on a tour of the estate which starts with the trail through the woods, then goes through the maze and into the house itself for a truly frightening experience.

The Haunted House is located on 10009 Dollarway Road, on Highway 365 at the Plainview entrance to the Pine Bluff Arsenal. Admission is $5; $6 on Halloween night.

Another Halloween related event for the family is at the fifth annual Boo on the Bayou, hosted by the Delta Rivers Nature Center in Regional Park, from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

In addition to games, crafts, face painting, animal programs and trick-or-treating out on the Nature Trail, there will be the Trail of Terror for those who need a little more scare in their evening.

The event is free and everyone is encouraged to come in costume. Food and drink will be available and flashlights are encouraged — there are no lights on the trail. Details: Call 534-0011.

The Junior League of Pine Bluff will Spice Up Your Southern Accent from 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Saracen Landing as the first chili cook-off sponsored by the group gets under way.

Live entertainment will be provided by Third Degree, presented by Franklin Artists. The $10 admission fee will include chili sampling and a pepper-eating contest. The event is for people 21 and older.
