CHRISTMAS SPIRIT THRIVING IN PINE BLUFF THIS WEEK

The annual Christmas Parade, judging for the Lights and Legends Home Lighting Contest and an Old Towne Christmas are activities featured this week.
The 60th annual Pine Bluff Christmas Parade, sponsored by the Jefferson County Civitan Club, will begin at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Eighth Avenue and Main Street and continue to the Jefferson County Courthouse.
“The Lights and Sounds of Christmas,” will be the theme. The entry fee for parade participants is one toy per group, which will be donated to the Salvation Army. Registration forms may be picked up at the Pine Bluff Mayor’s office or at the Economic Development Alliance of Jefferson County. Details: Call Renee Holland at 550-1281 or Angela Thayer at 247-1021.
Judging for the Lights and Legends Home Lighting Contest, sponsored by the Pine Bluff Festival Association, will begin at 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, with winners announced at the Dec. 7 Christmas for the Birds event at the Delta Rivers Nature Center.
An Old Towne Christmas is planned from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday inside the Jefferson County Courthouse. There will be food and entertainment such as carriage rides and a balloon artist, as well as other activities for children and adults.

The Jefferson County Extension Homemakers Council will sponsor an Old World Santa Workshop from 9 a.m. to noon Friday at the Jefferson County Cooperative Extension Service office, 500 Idaho St. Participants should register by today by calling 534-1033 in order for the frames to be ready. A fee of $10 must be paid in advance. The class size will be limited to 20.
The Pine Bluff Singers Madrigal Dinner will begin at 7 p.m. Friday through Saturday at Trinity Episcopal Church’s parish hall. Tickets are $25 for the dinner and Christmas program and are available by calling 543-4313.

“The World’s Biggest Tea Party,” will be presented on stage at 7 p.m. Friday as My Little Pony Live! comes to the Pine Bluff Convention Center auditorium. Pinkie Pie and all the favorite My Little Pony friends will appear live and on stage as the tea party comes to town for five performances. Additional times and dates are 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday and at 1 and 4:30 p.m. Dec. 2. This 90-minute, highly interactive musical production features singing, dancing and audience participation. Parents will enjoy the Broadway-quality stagecraft and original script. Tickets are $12 and $17 and a limited number of $23 premium seats are also available. On Friday, opening night, all seats (except premium) are $12. Details: Call 536-8700. The Power 92 Jammers will take on the Old School Altheimer Red Devils during a benefit basketball game Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Altheimer High School Gymnasium. The event is sponsored by the Altheimer Police Department’s KOPS for KIDS Program. The general public is invited. Admission will be $3 for adults and $2 for children. Concessions will be available. After the game, a party for youth will be held featuring DJs from Power 92. According to Altheimer Chief of Police Efrem Elliott, all money raised will be used for the KOPS for KIDS banquet, which will take place Dec. 21, and the December toy giveaway that will be held in conjunction with the banquet.
The South Central Center on Aging, along with the Area Agency on Aging of Southeast Arkansas and the Southeast Arkansas College Workforce Development Center, will sponsor an event to assist people with Medicare Part D enrollment. The event will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday in SEARK College’s Workforce Development Center, 2505 W. 18th Ave. First time enrollees as well as those who want to evaluate the need to change plans are invited. The Jefferson County Election Commission will meet at 10 a.m. Tuesday to draw ballot positions for the presidential preferential primary election to be held Feb. 5. The meeting will be held in the quorum courtroom of the county courthouse.
Pine Bluff Planning Commission will hold a public hearing at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Pine Bluff City Council Chambers at the civic center, 200 E. Eighth Ave.
The Jefferson County Transportation Planning Committee will meet Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Area Agency on Aging of Southeast Arkansas, 709 E. Eighth Ave.
The Watson Chapel Key Club will sponsor a dog show from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday on the parking lot of Watson Chapel High School. The cost is $1 per event and all proceeds will benefit the Jefferson County Chapter of the Humane Society. The dog show will feature three categories and there will be food, face painting, an adoption booth and dog training techniques.
n Pine Bluff’s new fire chief, Don Horton, will be sworn in Friday at 11 a.m. at the Pine Bluff Convention Center.
