BIG REC, HOLIDAY FOR THE BIRDS ON WEEKS’ SCHEDULE

A celebration will be held for a newly refurbished building at Townsend Park, Christmas for the Birds is scheduled and the Witness Project will bring a program to Pine Bluff about breast and cervical cancer.

State Rep. Stephanie Flowers of Pine Bluff and U.S. Rep. Mike Ross, D-Prescott, will join a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Big Rec in Townsend Park.

Ross will be the guest speaker at the center which has been refurbished under efforts led by Flowers.

Nicknamed the Big Rec, the youth center is intended as a way to help area teenagers develop social skills through arts, music, crafts and literature, a spokesman said.

The building was condemned by the city of Pine Bluff in 2004 and has since been restored.

Holiday festivities in Pine Bluff will include Christmas for the Birds, scheduled at 6 p.m. Friday at the Delta Rivers Nature Center at the Regional Park.

Participants will create ornaments from edible materials to decorate the center’s outside trees and to take home for visitors, such as birds or deer. Winners of the Lights and Legends Home Lighting Contest will be announced. Refreshments will be served and there is no admission fee.

The Witness Project, featuring black cancer survivors from Little Rock, will conduct a seminar at Pine Bluff.

The project is “a culturally competent community-based breast and cervical cancer education program,” a spokesman said.

The women of Eighth Avenue Missionary Baptist Church, 1200 W. Eighth Ave., will sponsor the seminar on breast and cervical cancer awareness Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. The public is invited to attend.

The Pine Bluff Symphony Orchestra will present A World of Holidays: Musical Inspirations of the Season at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Pine Bluff Convention Center. This will be an informal, family-oriented program with a fun mixture of classical and popular seasonal favorites.

  • U.S. Rep. Mike Ross’ district staff will hold community office hours Wednesday at Gould City Hall, beginning at 10 a.m., and at Altheimer City Hall, starting at 1 p.m. The staff will assist residents with issues related to federal programs, including Social Security, Medicare and veterans benefits. Details: Call Ross’ office at (800) 223-2220.

  • The Salvation Army Auxiliary will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the Great Hall of First United Methodist Church, 200 W. Sixth Ave. There will be a Festival of Tables, featuring tablescapes created by area residents, music by the Jenkins Choir and luncheon fare prepared by the auxiliary. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at the Salvation Army Corps offices at 501 E. 12th Ave. or from any auxiliary member. A limited number will be available at the door on the day of the event.

  • The Jefferson County Circle of Friends will have several fund-raising activities throughout this coming year that will provide money for Arkansas Children’s Hospital at Little Rock. The second annual Breakfast with Santa will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the White Hall City Hall. The event will cost $10 per child and will include breakfast, time and a picture with Santa and other fun activities. Additional breakfasts or pictures will be $5. Tickets will be available at the door.

  • The scholarship benefit brunch and fashion show will be hosted by the Pine Bluff Branch of the National Association of University Women from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The event will be held in the Lawrence A. Davis Sr. Student Union ballroom at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. Wanda Bateman, the owner of Margland Bed and Breakfast Inns, will be the commentator for the fashion show, which will feature high fashion from local boutiques — Gardenia’s, Trammell’s, Fathers and Sons Clothier, Fuh-Mei’s Jewelry, Alamae’s Designer Shoe Corner and Acquired Taste.

  • Margo Lynch will present a gallery talk for “Norman Rockwell’s Home for the Holidays” exhibit at 7 p.m. Monday at the Arts and Science Center for Southeast Arkansas, 701 S. Main St.

  • The Jefferson Regional Medical Center Auxiliary will host a musical Christmas program presented by an area choir, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, followed by hot cider and cookies. The lighting of the community Christmas tree outside the medical center’s Merritt Chapel will be at 6 p.m.

  • Gifts From the Kitchen, sponsored by the Jefferson County Cooperative Extension Service’s Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program, will be on view from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at the Pine Bluff/Jefferson County Health Department and Dec. 7 at the Department of Human Services.   • The Pine Bluff City Council meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. today at the council chambers at the civic center.

  • Committees of the Jefferson County Quorum Court will meet Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at the quorum courtroom of the county courthouse.

  • Pine Bluff’s Neighborhood Watch Office will sponsor an appreciation meal for the Pine Bluff Police and Fire departments, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department and Arkansas State Police stationed locally. The meals will be served Wednesday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Masonic Lodge on Harding Avenue.

  • Pine Bluff Rotary Club will meet at noon Tuesday at the Pine Bluff Country Club. The speaker will be John Stansbury, director of medical imaging at Jefferson Regional Medical Center. West Pine Bluff Rotary Club will meet at noon Thursday in the same location. The guest speaker will be Hubert Brodell, former mayor of Jonesboro, an ambassador for the Valley View Adult Education Center.
