Regional basketball tournaments to kick off this week

Southeast Arkansas will be well-represented in the Class 4A, 3A, and 2A regional basketball tournaments this week.

From Class 4A, there are seven schools in The Commercial’s coverage area that will be competing in the regional tournament. The Dollarway boys, Dumas boys’ and girls’, Fordyce girls, McGehee boys, Star City girls, and Warren girls’ basketball teams will compete in the Class 4A South regional tournament in Fordyce, which begins on Wednesday at the Bear Bryant Arena at Fordyce High School.

On Wednesday, the Warren girls (No. 4 8-4A) will open the 4A South tournament at 4 p.m. against the 7-4A champion Central Arkansas Christian in first-round action. The McGehee boys (No. 4 8-4A) will take on CAC (No. 1 7-4A) at 5:30 p.m. In the nightcap, the Dumas’ girls (No. 1 8-4A) will face Mena (No. 4 7-4A) at 7 p.m. At 8:30 p.m., the Dollarway boys (No. 1 8-4A) will play Pulaski Oak Grove (No. 4 7-4A).

The Star City girls (No. 2 8-4A) will face DeQueen (No. 3 7-4A) at 4 p.m. Thursday. The Fordyce girls (No. 3 8-4A) will take on Nashville (No. 2 7-4A) at 7 p.m. Rounding out first-round action will be the Dumas boys (No. 3 8-4A), who will face Arkansas Baptist (No. 2 7-4A) at 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

The semifinal games in the Class 4A South tournament are on Friday at 4 p.m. (girls), 5:30 p.m. (boys), 7 p.m. (girls), and 8:30 p.m. (boys). The championship games will be on Saturday at 6 p.m. (girls) and 7:30 p.m. (boys).

The Stuttgart boys (No. 3 2-4A) and girls (No. 4 2-4A) will compete in the Class 4A East regional tournament in Bald Knob this week. The Stuttgart boys will face Osceola (No. 2 3-4A) at 5:30 p.m. Thursday while the Stuttgart girls will take on Highland (No. 1 3-4A) at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

In Class 3A, the Rison boys (No. 4 8-3A) will compete in the Region 4 tournament in Centerpoint. Rison will face Prescott (No. 1 7-3A) at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The Woodlawn girls (No. 1 8-2A) and boys (No. 2 8-2A) will play in the Class 2A East regional tournament at Augusta. The Woodlawn girls will face Palestine-Wheatley (No. 4 6-2A) at 7 p.m. Wednesday while the Woodlawn boys will take on Clarendon (No. 3 6-2A) at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

The Class 4A state tournament is at Dumas High School from next Tuesday (Feb. 26) to Saturday, March 1. Last year, Dumas was scheduled to host the 4A state tournament, but the tournament was moved to Bald Knob after two tornadoes hit the Desha County city. The Class 3A state tournament is in Cave City and the 2A state tournament will be played at Jessieville.
