UNDERAGE DRINKING MEETING, RAILROADIANA EVENT SET

Underage drinking will be the topic at a town hall meeting, the annual Railroadiana is coming to town and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff plans a career fair and educational access programs this week.
Today at 5:45 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club, 2701 Short Reeker St., a town hall meeting will be held to address the problem of underage drinking.
Sponsored by the Louis Bryant Chapter of Arkansas Troopers and the Boys and Girls Club, the event will be one of hundreds across the country, said Capt. Lloyd Franklin, commander of Troop E of the State Police at Pine Bluff, and president of the Louis Bryant chapter. Franklin said studies show that approximately 29 percent of young people ages 12 to 20 have used alcohol illegally. Parents, teachers, youth and community leaders are encouraged to attend the meeting.
For train enthusiasts, the 13th annual Railroadiana Show and Sale will be held at the Arkansas Railroad Museum at Pine Bluff from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Railroadiana is recognized as the largest exhibition of railroad-related items in Arkansas. Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children, 6 to 12. Youngsters under 6 will be admitted free. This week at UAPB, the 2008 Spring Career Day/Teacher Education Fair will be held from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday in the Kenneth L. Johnson Sr. Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Complex.
More than 80 representatives of business/industry, government, graduate and professional schools and school districts will be available to speak with UAPB students. Details: Contact the Office of Career Services at UAPB, 575-8461.
UAPB will also hold the 15th annual Mary E. Benjamin Conference on Educational Access at Henderson-Young Hall. The keynote address will be presented by Dr. Jim Purcell, director of the Arkansas Department of Higher Education, Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. in the Sylvester Early Auditorium. Dr. Frank Ashley will be the luncheon speaker on Wednesday at noon. He is vice president for Academic Affairs at the Texas A&M University System. The closing luncheon on Thursday at noon will feature UAPB’s Chancellor Lawrence A. Davis Jr.

The second annual Trinity Episcopal School Benefit Golf Tournament will take place at the Pine Bluff Country Club. The four-man scramble tournament starts at 1 p.m. Friday and is $500 per team. The tournament also has a helicopter golf ball drop. Participants purchase golf balls with a number assigned to each. At the end of the tournament, a helicopter will drop all the balls on a designated hole’s green. The ball that goes in the cup, or lands closest to the hole, will net $1,000 for its owner. Legoria Payton and Friends — Milt Jackson and Ed Lawson — will provide the musical entertainment for the Live at Five at the Arts and Science Center for Southeast Arkansas. The event will be held at the center, 701 S. Main St., from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday and food and beverages will be served. The cost is $5 per person. Details: Call the center at 536-3375, Extension 18.
Rock Your Decade, which celebrates the past 50 years of rock ’n’ roll, will be held Saturday at the Harbor Oaks Golf Club from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. Sponsored by the Junior League of Pine Bluff, the event will benefit Voices for Children and the CASA (Committee Against Spouse Abuse) Women’s Shelter at Pine Bluff. The Arkansas Historic Preservation Program’s next Walk Through History is scheduled for the Dumas Commercial Historic District. The tour will focus on the early 20th-Century buildings that reflect the growth of Dumas as a regional agricultural center. The tour will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday and is co-sponsored by the Desha County Museum. Tours are free and open to the public. The Cane Creek Lake Trail, which is a multi-use mountain bike and hiking trail at the Cane Creek State Park near Star City, has recently attracted its first mountain biker. Derek Trail has been all over the U.S. and as far as Canada mountain biking. He found the Cane Creek trail by visiting the Arkansas State Parks Adventure Parks Web site. The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the trail will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday and the public is invited to attend and stay to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Arkansas State Parks.
The 24th annual English Tea and Sale, hosted by the women of Grace Episcopal Church, will be held from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday at the church, at 4101 S. Hazel St. Admission is $7 in advance or at the door. Tickets may be purchased from any member of Grace Episcopal Church Women, from the church office or by calling 535-3852. The English Tea is the fund-raiser for the outreach programs of the Church Women.
The Jefferson County Cooperative Extension Service is providing a class for childcare workers from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, at the Extension offices, 500 Idaho St. Classes are free and continuing education units are available for $10. The Arkansas 4-H Afterschool Program will offer verified training though the Arkansas Early Childhood Professional Development System.
