DEATHS FOR THURSDAY, JULY 3, 2008

Jessten Collins

Mr. Jessten Dedrell Collins, 23, of Pine Bluff died Friday, June 27, 2008.

He was born in Pine Bluff to Barbara Collins and Jessie Collins Sr.

His survivors inlcude brothers, Jessie Colllins Jr. and Jess Collins; grandfather, James Matthews Sr.; great-grandfather, Charles Jenkins; great-grandmother, Jodie Burks, all of Pine Bluff.

His services will be Friday, July 4, 2008, at Family Time Baptist Church by Rev. Michael Williams at 11 a.m. Burial will be in P.K. Miller Cemetery.

Visitation will be today from 6-7:30 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home of Pine Bluff.

The family will be at 1214 E. Sixth Ave., Pine Bluff, Ark.

Roy Hunter

Roy Wilson Hunter was born in the front room of his family home place in Weddington, N.C., Feb. 5, 1924. Roy liked to say that he grew up on a four mule farm during the Depression. He ended his earthly life on July 1, 2008, at his garden terrace home in Trinity Retirement Village in Pine Bluff, Ark.

He leaves behind his wife Corinne; daughters, Sharon Norton and Martha Hunter Guesman; son, Roy Hunter Jr. (Hunt); grandsons, Hunter and Winfrey Norton; granddaughter, Marissa Hunter, and his sister, Margaret Hunter Beadle.

He was predeceased by his father V.S. Hunter and mother Martha; brothers, Vic and Jim Hunter; and sister, Betsy Hunter De-Laney.

Roy graduated from Waxhaw High School in 1941, where he was voted Outstanding Senior of his class. Having completed one semester of Pheiffer Junior College, he enrolled in N.C. State Defense College in aircraft inspection in Raleigh and graduated in 1942. He worked in Fairchild Aircraft in Hagerstown, Md., and Burlington, N.C., until joining the Navy in 1944. He served in the Asiatic/Pacific Arena until his discharge. Roy hitchhiked across the country with his boyhood friend Gib McNeely before enrolling at N.C. State in Raleigh in 1946.

While visiting his sister Betsy, a nurse in Charlotte, he met his future wife Corrine Boyd. They were married on Sept. 3, 1949, in Charlotte, moving to Raleigh until he completed his chemical engineering degree in June 1950. Following his graduation he began a 35-year career with International Paper, working in South Carolina, Alabama and Arkansas. He continued to work as a consultant in the pulp and paper industry after his retirement in 1985. His years of stewardship to future engineers was recognized by the establishment of the Roy W. Hunter Scholarship Endowment at the Pulp and Paper Foundation, N.C. State University, Raleigh.

He expressed his faith in God through his commitment to the First Presbyterian Church of Pine Bluff, serving as a deacon. He expressed his love of nature through his active involvement in Ducks Unlimited. A particularly proud moment was when he reproduced the classic documentary Prairie Wings from film to video, making it available to future generations of duck hunters.

Roy Hunter will be remembered for his unending wit, his laugh that resonated throughout his body, his sense of fairness, his joy and appreciation of the outdoors, and his solid faith and pursuit of knowledge and understanding in a changing world.

Roy’s life will be celebrated in a memorial service Thursday, July 3, 2008, at 2 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church, 717 W. 32nd Ave., Pine Bluff, Ark., 71603, with Rev. Jeff Price officiating.

Charles Harper

LITTLE ROCK — Charles Scott Harper of Little Rock, Ark., was born Oct. 20, 1966, at Pine Bluff, the son of Charles Thomas and Mary Kimmer Harper. He was a 1985 graduate of Pine Bluff High School and a 1990 graduate of the University of Central Arkansas.

Scott had served in the United States Army and was senior analyst programmer for Trans-America Worksite Marketing. He was a member of Fellowship Bible Church and enjoyed cooking and reading. The greatest joy in Scott’s life was being “Daddy” to his children, Tyler, Zane, and Zoe.

Mr. Harper died Tuesday, July 1, 2008, at his parent’s home in Sheridan after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 41.

Survivors include his children, Tyler, Zane, and Zoe Harper of Little Rock; parents, Charles and Mary Kimmer Harper of Sheridan; brother, David and wife Karen Harper of Wichita, Kan.; niece and nephew, Kelsey and Sam Harper of Wichita, Kan.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, July 5, 2008, at Memorial Gardens Funeral Home Chapel in Sheridan with Rev. David Harper and Rev. Brian Kesterson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Sheridan.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Friday.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Gladys Russ

SPRINGHILL, La. — Gladys Jean “Stovall” Russ, 67, of Springhill, La., died Friday at Jefferson Regional Medical Center at Pine Bluff.

She was born Sept. 18, 1940, at McKamie, Ark., a daughter of the late Aravine Stovall and Alma Lawson.

Survivors: children, Alvin Russ, Sheldon W. Russ, Cynthia Lawson and Tonya Farris; sisters, Alverta Ward, Rosie Jamerson, Francine Landrum and Patricia Williams; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services: 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Friendship Baptist Church at Stamps, Ark., with Lewis Shepherd Jr. officiating. Burial: church cemetery by Smith Funeral Home at Stamps.

Visitation: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

Roland Thomas, 82, of Pine Bluff died Tuesday at St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center at Little Rock. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors.

STUTTGART — Ann McDonald, 77, of Stuttgart died June 28.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Anointed House of Prayer at Stuttgart. Arrangements are by Richardson Memorial Funeral Home at Stuttgart.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
