ELECTRONIC SCRAP COLLECTION TO MAKE PINE BLUFF DEBUT

The Arts and Science Center for Southeast Arkansas’s summer musical continues this week and community organizers plan the first effort to collect electronic waste.
Four performances of “Guys and Dolls” remain in the run of the show at the arts and science center. Performances will be held in the center’s Catherine M. Bellamy Theater at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Tickets are $18 for center members and $20 for nonmembers. They are available by visiting the center at 701 S. Main St. or by calling 536-3375.

Beautiful Commission and Jefferson County Recycling will host the first electronic scrap collection event Saturday.
Residents and businesses may dispose of any electronic items between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday at a facility at East 16th Avenue and Pennsylvania Street.
In the past year the city of Pine Bluff collected 12,000 pounds of electronic equipment such as televisions, computers, cell phones and other products. This effort prevented these objects from contaminating the landfill with lead, oil, and other hazardous waste. In the past year the city collected 10,000 pounds of oil based and latex paint and collected hundreds of pounds of oil, pesticides and old batteries, a spokesman said.

The Pine Bluff Rotary Club will meet at noon Tuesday at the Pine Bluff Country Club. Local economic development will be the topic. On Thursday, the West Pine Bluff Rotary Club will meet at the country club and the speaker will be Ian Cash, discussing the Rotary district’s Zimbabwe Water Project.
A meeting to organize a support group for those with epilepsy/seizures will be held Thursday from 5-7 p.m. at the Jefferson Comprehensive Care Center Inc., 1101 Tennessee St. There will be food, fun, inspiration and support, according to a spokesman for the group. Those attending will learn more about epilepsy, hear inspiring personal stories and meet others living with epilepsy. Friends and family members are also invited to attend, the spokesman said. Detroit Johnnie, a native of Detroit, will perform on jazz guitar at the monthly Live at 5 set for 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 1, at the Arts and Science Center for Southeast Arkansas, 701 S. Main St. Introduced to blues when he was 8 years old, Johnnie spent time learning and receiving mentoring from Milt Jackson, Robert Nighthawk and the like. The Dollarway School Board will hold a special called meeting at 6 p.m. today at Townsend Park Elementary School cafeteria. The purpose is to approve financial documents and employ personnel.
The St. Luke United Methodist Church, 32 School St., will sponsor a free meal for Dollarway area residents at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the church. |
