LABOR DAY, FOOTBALL, AFTER-SCHOOL SCHOLARS MEAN BUSY WEEK

The Labor Day holiday will be celebrated, high school football will get under way and the arts and science center will host after-school fun.

Pine Bluff and White Hall city halls as well as Jefferson County Courthouse and related governmental offices will be closed today in observance of Labor Day.

Officials at the ninth annual Simmons First/Hootens.com Kickoff Week event announced that Monticello, Dumas, Lonoke, and Vilonia will face each other at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff today. Dumas squares off against Lonoke at 4:30 p.m., followed by Monticello and Vilonia, a battle between 5A state title contenders.

On Friday, high school football kicks off. Games include Watson Chapel Wildcats challenging the Warren Lumberjacks when they travel to Watson Chapel and Pine Bluff High School opens its season at Fort Smith Northside.

At the Arts and Science Center for Southeast Arkansas, 701 S. Main St., the After-School Scholars Program, will be held from 4-5:30 p.m. on Terrific Tuesdays and Wellness Wednesdays. Terrific Tuesdays begin Tuesday and continue through Dec. 30. Classes will not be held Nov. 25 or Dec. 23. The program will end with a special class from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 30. The cost of the entire program is $120 for members of the center and $150 for non-members. Wellness Wednesdays begin Wednesday and run to March 11. The cost is $200 for members and $250 for non-members.

The After-School Scholars Program is open to children from third to sixth grades. Pre-registration is required; scholarships are available by calling 536-3375. The program includes a light snack for the children and lunch Dec. 30. Some transportation is available.

The arts and science center will also host a reception honoring the work of Janis Gill Ward, a Pine Bluff native who divides her time between Fayetteville and Florida. The event will be held from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the center. Light refreshments will be served and the artist will discuss her work.

The reception will be held in conjunction with Live@5, the monthly jazz series, which will feature the Joe Pitts Band; guitarist Pitts, a Pine Bluff native, will perform jazz, blues and rock from 5-7 p.m. Friday. Admission to the reception and all galleries is free. The cost of the Live@5 is $5 and includes light refreshments. Details: Pat Hopkins, 536-3375.

  • Orientation for SOS (Students with Opportunities to Soar) will be held from 4-5 p.m. Tuesday and Sept. 16 and 30 at the Donald W. Reynolds Community Services Center, 211 W. Third Ave. Any 10th, 11th or 12th grader in Jefferson County interested in participating in the program, which emphasizes volunteering and volunteerism, may attend.

  • There will be a meet-and-greet at the White Hall City Hall’s Community Center at 2 p.m. Sunday to honor Jerri James, the Pine Bluff Fibromyalgia Support Group leader. Family and friends are invited to attend.

  • The Pine Bluff City Council will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Council Chambers at the Pine Bluff Civic Center.

  • Jefferson County Quorum Court Committees will meet Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Quorum Courtroom of the County Courthouse.

  • Pine Bluff Rotary Club meets Tuesday at noon at the Pine Bluff Country Club. The speaker will be Grif Stockley, an author from Little Rock. Thursday, the West Pine Bluff Rotary Club will meet at noon at the country club and the speaker will be Brandon Robinson, a delegate to the Democratic National Convention.

  • Weed and Seed Coffee with the Chiefs is scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, 1801 Indiana St. The speaker will be state Rep. Earnest E. Brown Jr.
