Walter Baker

Walter Howard Baker, age 100, of Pine Bluff, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2008.

Born Aug. 15, 1908 in Lincoln County, he was a son of the late George Walter Baker and Laura Virginia Singleton Baker. He retired as a carman for the Cotton Belt Railroad after 30 years of service.

Mr. Baker was a long-time member of First Immanuel Missionary Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon.

Preceding Mr. Baker in death are two wives, Myrtle Wilma Taylor Baker in 1966 and Tina Powers Eubanks Baker in 1992; and five sisters.

Survivors include three sons, Harley Baker of Ridgecrest, Calif., Dewey Baker of Pine Bluff, and Conrad Baker of Olathe, Kan.; two daughters, LaDella “Dell” Edwards of Burleson, Texas and Marcelline Pierce of Rapid City, South Dakota; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, 9:30 a.m. at Fuller Hale-South Funeral Chapel with Harley Baker and Norman Pierce, son and son-in-law, respectively, of Mr. Baker officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

S.L. Tompkins

RISON — S. L. Tompkins, age 90, of Rison, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008 at his home. He was born March 7, 1918 in Gary, Texas, a son of the late Bud and Jewie Hutchinson Tompkins. Mr. Tompkins was a World War II Army veteran, and a retired home builder. He was a Mason for over 60 years where he was a member of Grand Lodge of Houston, Texas, and a Shriner. Mr. Tompkins was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and a member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Ona Earle Tompkins, three brothers; Edgar Tompkins, Elton Tompkins, and Elsie Tompkins.

Mr. Tompkins is survived by his wife, Juanita Harris Tompkins, of Rison, whom he married April 7, 1989; four sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Sally Tompkins, of Austin, Texas, Randy and Donna Hankins of Rison, Mark and Sheila Hankins of Rison, Scott and Rachel Hankins of Rison; sister, Agnes Sweazey of Houston, Texas; four brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, J.C. and Joan Harris of Pine Bluff, O. W. and Ruth Harris of Crockett, Texas, Eugene and Carolyn Freeman of Rison, and Sonny and Floy Ferguson of White Hall; 20 grandchildren, Travis Tompkins, Jeff Tompkins, Andrew Periard, Sophia Periard, Mary Tompkins, Mellisa Tompkins, Heather Hankins, Amanda Hankins, Jessica Hankins, Zachery Hankins, Trey Hankins, Hannah Hankins, Asa Hankins, Charles Hankins, Lisa Hankins, Josh Hankins, William Hurst, Louie Hurst, Marc Johnson, and Amy Crook; eight great-grandchildren, Christian Tompkins, Faith Tompkins, Justin Hill, Joseph Hill, Courtney Hankins, Jenny Hankins, Cassidy Hurst, and Kassie Hurst; a very special nephew, Steven Freeman; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday Sept. 30, 2008 at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church in Calmer with Reverend Beth Perdue officiating. Helen Earnest

WARREN — Helen Williams Earnest, 87, of Warren died Saturday.

She was born Jan. 17, 1921, at New Edinburg, a daughter of the late Lewis Arter Williams and Emma Jane Bryant Williams.

She was a retired nurse’s aide, charter member of Calvary Baptist Church and the widow of James W. Earnest.

Survivors include a son, Steven Earnest of Stephens; a daughter, Paula Garlington of Fordyce; a brother, Gordon H. Williams of Venice, Fla.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services 2 p.m. Tuesday at Frazer’s Funeral Home. Burial in Moseley Cemetery.

Visitation 6 to 8 p.m. Monday.

Jacqueline Atkinson

LOUISVILLE, Miss. — Mrs. Jacqueline Crick Dempsey Atkinson, 76, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2008, at her home in Louisville. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 29th, in Weir Cemetery, with Rev. Charles Davis officiating. Interment will be in Weir Cemetery in Weir, Miss. Visitation was from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Porter Funeral Home. Mrs. Atkinson was born Dec. 15, 1932, in Weir, Miss. She was the daughter of Rowena Keen and Rev. E. Z. Crick. She was a retired shipping and receiving clerk from Wal-Mart, and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Elbert A. (Gabe) Atkinson; two daughters, Marsha Dempsey James and Renee Atkinson Edwards, both of Louisville; three sons, Dennis Dale Dempsey of Louisville, J. Randle Dempsey of Homewood, Ill., and Robert Lamar Dempsey of Louisville; a step-son, Bobby Atkinson of Starkville; a sister, Annie Catherine Cockrell of Louisville; 11 grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. Mable Hubbard, 98, of Pine Bluff died Sunday at Jefferson Regional Medical Center. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Perry Funeral Home.
