DEATHS FOR FRIDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2008

Margie Clayton

Mrs. Margie Ann Clayton, 59, of Pine Bluff died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008.

She was born in Grady to Everlina Ringo of Pine Bluff and the late Sonny Ringo.

Her survivors include husband, Johnie Clayton; daughters, Crystal Burns, both of Pine Bluff, Carolyn Clayton of Chicago, Sonia Blackwell of College Station, Texas, Laquana Billingsley of Omaha, Neb., and Stacy Clayton of North Little Rock, Ark.; brothers, Melvin Geiggar, Schedrick Ringo, Donnie Ringo and James Ringo, all of Pine Bluff, and Eddie Ringo of Grady; sister, Roberta Harris of Star City; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Her services will be Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008, at Grace Temple Baptist Church by Rev. Amelio P. Howard at 10. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Visitation is today from 6-7:30 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home of Pine Bluff.

The family will be at 1721 S. Florida St., Pine Bluff, Ark.

The body will lie in state at the church from 9:15 a.m. until time of service.

Mable Hubbard

Funeral services for Mable Hightower Hubbard, 99, of Pine Bluff, who died Sept. 27 at JRMC, will be held Saturday, 1 p.m., Kings Highway MBC, Rev. Walter C. May Sr. pastor.

She was born July 28, 1909, in Cornerstone, Ark., daughter of the late John D. Hightower and Josephine Monroe Lusk.

She attained her education at St. Peter’s Catholic School and Merrill High School. Further education was attained at Branch Normal College (UAPB). She was a substitute teacher until her marriage.

She was a former member of Chapel Grove MBC in Wabbaseka for many years. In 1965 she joined Kings Highway MBC, where she remained until her death. She was chairman of the mother’s board, worked with food services and assisted with Vacation Bible School. Her work in the church was limited because she was a full-time care provider for her son 38 years.

She was a member of the Home Demonstration Club of Jefferson County and was presented awards for her services. She worked many years with the local 4-H Club.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Ernestine Hightower; brother, Oscar Duncan; three children, Swayzine Pierre, Vera Hubbard, James Hubbard Jr.; husband, James Hubbard Sr.

Survivors: one son, Odell (Phay) Hubbard, Henderson, Texas; two daughters, Cozetta (Freeman) Hardy, Silver Springs, Md., Melba Williams, Pine Bluff; five grandchildren, Dr. Tonya (Floyd) Jones, Fort Washington, Md., Tasha (Tyrone) Thomas Esq., Silver Spring, Md., Kimberly W. Brody, Laurel, Md., Kellee W. Lacy, Pine Bluff, Kevin (Demica) Hubbard, Henderson, Texas; six great-grandchildren, Floyd Alexander Jones, Meleia A. Lacy, Christopher Demarrion Hubbard, Keyanna Keshay Hubbard, Nicholas O’Brian, Kayden D. Hubbard.

Visitations may be made today 4 p.m. until 7 p.m., family hour 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

The remains will lie in state at the church Saturday, noon until funeral time.

Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, Cedar Grove Section, by Perry Funeral Home.

Lura Lewis

Lura L. Lewis, 91, of Pine Bluff died Wednesday.

Survivors include three sons, Jimmy Childress of New Edinburg, Russell Childress of Jackson, Tenn., and Robert Childress of Pine Bluff; two stepdaughters, Carolyn Rhoads and Judy McConnell, both of White Hall; one brother, Clell Cox of Harrisonville, Mo.; 17 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hebron United Methodist Church near Kingsland. Burial will be in Hebron Cemetery by Buie Funeral Home of Rison.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Vida Patterson

Vida Patterson, 66, of Pine Bluff died Saturday at Baptist Health Medical Center at Little Rock.

She was born May 29, 1942, in Ghana, a daughter of the late D.C. and Anna Ashong.

She worked as a registered nurse at Jefferson Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include her husband, Dr. Andrew Patterson; one son, Victor Patterson; and one grandchild.

Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Good Faith United Methodist Church. Arrangements are by Brown Funeral Home of Pine Bluff.

Visitation will be from 4:30-7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

The body will be at the church from 8:30 a.m. until time of service Saturday.

James Akin

HAMBURG — James Edward Akin, age 76, of Hamburg went home to be with our Lord and Savior on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008, at the Arkansas Heart Hospital in Little Rock, Ark.

He was born Jan. 5, 1932, in Greenville, Miss., to the late George Roy Akin and Lizzie Louise Hackman Akin.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Earl Akin; and a sister, Juanita Halley.

He was a retired school superintendent and basketball coach and was a member of the Southside Baptist Church of Hamburg. He was ordained as a deacon on Dec. 11, 1988, at Parkdale Baptist Church, where he was a member for many years. Coach Akin enjoyed much success as a basketball coach and has coached senior boys, junior boys, senior girls and junior girls in the Humnoke, Wilmar and Parkdale School districts from 1959-1989.

His coaching career included Humnoke (1959-1961), Wilmar (1961-1964), and Parkdale (1964-1989). He was inducted into the Arkansas High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame and the Ashley County Sports Hall of Fame. At Parkdale his overall record was 937 wins and 135 losses, which is an 87.5 percent winning percentage. Coach Akin’s record also included two overall semifinalists, three state titles, three state runner ups, and 89 tournament titles.

Mr. Akin is survived by his wife of 55 years, Joy Burton Akin of Hamburg; three daughters, Darlene Skender and husband, Paul of Crossett, Wendy Dailey and husband, John Allen of Hamburg and Tana Vail and husband, Jerry of Hamburg; one brother, Joe Akin and wife Barbara of Monticello; six grandchildren, Brian Skender of Monticello, Stephanie Hoops of Crossett, Kim Johnson of Hamburg, Tiffany Dailey of Cabot, Tarrah Smithson of Hickory, N.C. and Brittany Weeks of Bryant; and nine great-grandchildren, Cole Skender of Monroe, La., Wyatt Hoops of Little Rock, Dalton Hoops of Crossett, Jaylon, Logan and Kenslie Johnson of Hamburg, Steele Smithson of Hickory, N.C., Sydney Smithson of Hot Springs and Anna Claire Weeks of Bryant and a host of extended friends and family.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008, at the Stephenson-Dearman Funeral Home Chapel in Monticello by Rev. Charles Pullin and Rev. Buddy Lemons. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Monticello, Ark., under the direction of Stephenson-Dearman Funeral Home.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.

William McCoy

MONTICELLO — William “Dub” McCoy, age 63, of Monticello, passed away Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, at his home.

He was born Dec. 25, 1944, in Drew County, Ark.

He was owner of McCoy Tire Shop and was preceded in death by his daughter, Michona McCoy; one sister, Pattsy King; and two brothers, Robert McCoy Jr. and Earl Lee Stanley. He was the son of the late Robert McCoy Sr. and Gussie Owen McCoy.

Survivors include one son, William McCoy Jr. of Dallas, Texas; two daughters, Rosalind Tenner and husband, Keith and Tamira McCoy, all of Monticello; three grandchildren all of Monticello; 11 sisters, Nellie McCoy, Julie Mae Walker, Georgia Fisher, Lorine McCoy, Virgie Mae McCoy, Minnie Ada Cochran, Mattie Lee Johnson, Lucille Prosper, all of Monticello, Mary Ann Barnes and husband, Wade of Reed, Ark., Lois Jean Jackson of Wilmar, and Artie Lucas of Coleman; two brothers, R.C. McCoy Sr. and wife, Alene and Eddie Don McCoy, all of Monticello.

Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Stephenson-Dearman Chapel with burial in Union Ridge Cemetery. Rev. Christopher Goodman officiating.

Family visitation is 6-7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

All arrangements are made by Stephenson-Dearman Funeral Home of Monticello.

Amanda Richardson

TUCKER — Mrs. Amanda Richardson, 90, of Tucker, Ark., died Sept. 27 in North Little Rock at Baptist Health Hospital.

She was born March 20, 1918, in Pastoria, Ark., to the late Brown and Irene Collins.

She was preceded in death by husband, William Richardson; children, James Richardson, Moses Richardson, Nathaniel Richardson and Dorothy Matta.

Survivors: sons, William Richardson Jr. of Pastoria, Ark., Calvin Richardson of Tucker, Ark.; daughters, Ora Lee Reece of Chicago, Ill., Bobbie Adway of Tucker, Ark., Earlean Adway of Milwaukee, Wis., Gloria Tillmon of Tucker, Ark., Vanessa Richardson of Tucker, Ark.; brother, John (J.C.) Collins of Berkley, Calif.; sisters, Elfreda McLymore of Tucker, Ark., Estella Rucker of Detroit, Mich., Odessa Eaton of Milwaukee, Wis., Leester Collins of Detroit, Mich., Bessie Hoskins of Chicago, Ill.; 37 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be Saturday, Oct. 4 at New Salem Missionary Baptist Church in Sherrill, Ark., at 2:30 p.m. Rev. Clark E. Thomas will be officiating. Burial in Elwin Smith Cemetery by Christian Way Funeral Home.

Visitation will be the day of service from 1:30 until time of service.

Vivian Brooks

WARREN — Vivian Nelson Brooks, 94, of Warren died Tuesday at Wagnon Place Nursing Home.

She was born July 1, 1914, at Vicksburg, Miss., a daughter of the late Edward Todd Nelson and Vivian Marie Couret Nelson.

Survivors include two sons, David Brooks of Warren and Nelson Brooks of Richardson, Texas; one daughter, Nancy Green of Star City; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Oakland Cemetery with the Rev. Gary Maskell officiating. Arrangements are by Frazer’s Funeral Home of Warren.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Dorothy Harrison

WHITE HALL — Dorothy Ann Harrison, 34, of White Hall died Saturday.

She was born Sept. 2, 1974, at Pine Bluff, a daughter of Louie Harrison and Gertie Stanley Harrison.

She was a member of Harvest Time Church at White Hall.

Other survivors include two brothers, Cayleb Harrison and Billy Harrison, both of White Hall; and two sisters, Mamie Cooper and April Cooley, both of White Hall.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Harvest Time Church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery by Cranford Funeral Home of White Hall.

Visitation will be at 4 p.m. today at the church.

Alger Nash

MANTECA, Calif. — Alger U. “Slappy” Nash, 77, of Manteca, Calif., formerly of Altheimer, Ark., passed away Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008, at Stockton, Calif.

He was a graduate of Jones High School in North Little Rock, Ark. In the spring of 1955, he graduated from Arkansas AM&N College (now the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff), where he was a star basketball player.

He was hired at the Altheimer Training School during the 1955-56 school year as a teacher and basketball coach. During his first year, he led the Wildcats with a 36-3 record. Two years later, Mr. Nash’s team had the best record in school history with 52 wins and three losses. On May 19, 1961, Altheimer Training School was changed to Martin High School. During his 14-year coaching career, he had a record of 473 wins and 95 losses. Under his coaching one of his players, Jackie Ridgle, became Martin High School’s first basketball All-American player in 1967. Mr. Nash resigned after the 1968-69 school year.

After moving to San Jose, Calif., in 1969 he began teaching general science, physical education and coaching the varsity basketball team at William C. Overfelt. He retired in 1992.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Valerie Nash.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine Nash; sons, Don Nash, Jimmy Nash, Stanley Nash and Roger Nash; two stepdaughters, Lori Hoye (Walter) and Katrina Wetzel (Allen); eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials may take the form of contributions to Alger U. Nash Scholarship Fund, University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, 1200 N. University Drive, Pine Bluff, Ark., 71601.

Alice Lodean Holley, 88, of Pine Bluff died Thursday. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Fuller Hale-South Funeral Services.
