Opal Scott
MONTICELLO — Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, though he dies, yet shall he live, and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die.” John 11: 25-26.
Opal Belt Scott died at her home in Monticello, Ark., on Oct. 7, 2008. At the time of her passing she was at peace and surrounded by her loving family. Opal was born on Dec. 11, 1926, in Doucette, Texas, to Robert and Alma Belt.
She was preceded in death by her father and her mother and her brother Bob and sister Pearl.
Opal is survived by Thomas Robie Scott Jr., her loving and dedicated husband of 57 years; sons, Thomas Robie Scott III and his wife, Gale Grice Scott (of Little Rock, Ark.), and their sons, Cory and Zeb (of Fayetteville, Ark.); Michael Robert Scott and his wife, Anita Langford Scott and their daughters McKenna, Marit and Micah (of Little Rock, Ark.), and Phillip Roland Scott and his wife Karla Seiter Scott (of Fayetteville, Ark.); sisters, Cleo Watts (Tennessee Colony, Texas) and Jon Chachere (Dayton, Texas).
Opal and Robie were married Jan. 7, 1951, at the First Baptist Church in Woodville, Texas. Soon thereafter Opal “closed the doors” to her beauty salon businesses in Woodville and Colmesneil, Texas and moved to Monticello with her husband and new son to begin her life as a caring, loving and devoted wife and mother. Opal was a homemaker and the “rock” of the Scott family. Despite the trials and tribulations of caring for a husband and three sons, Opal was always steady, calm and focused on dealing with whatever challenges that arose. The Scott family has enjoyed the fruits of Opal’s enduring love, faith and compassion. She was blessed with physical beauty, athleticism and grace. Opal enjoyed, and gained a sense of fulfillment, through her passion for landscaping and gardening. She was such a calming and peaceful soul to all who had the opportunity to know her.
In 1994 Opal contracted Alzheimer’s disease. Despite the ravages of Alzheimer’s, Opal’s life was blessed with a strong husband who provided his “sweetheart” with loving and dedicated care in their home during those many years. Robie and Opal’s relationship during this time demonstrated to their sons and their families and to many others in Monticello, the true meaning of one’s wedding vows. Robie provided Opal with a seemingly endless supply of care and comfort. The family is convinced Opal was aware of Robie’s steadfast love and that this awareness was what kept her in the lives of her family for the past 14 years.
The exceptional love, care and friendship provided to Opal by Marilyn Maxwell, Marge Simpson and Joe and Barbara Brannen holds a special place in our hearts and minds. You are like family and all you have done is sincerely appreciated.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday Oct. 10th at the First United Methodist Church in Monticello, Ark.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Monticello, Ark. (870.367.2471) or to Alzheimer’s Arkansas, Little Rock, Ark. (800.689.6090).
Thank you Dear Lord for the life of Opal Belt Scott.
