By Ray King/OF THE COMMERCIAL STAFF

A Pine Bluff man described by police as a “person of interest” in a Wednesday homicide surrendered to authorities Thursday morning.

Desmond Haywood, 19, was wanted for questioning in the shooting death of Michael D. Green, 36, of Pine Bluff.

Pine Bluff police Sgt. Richard Davies said Haywood turned himself in to detectives and was taken to the Jefferson County Detention Center. He was held on probable cause of first-degree murder pending a court appearance today and the filing of formal charges by the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

Haywood was being sought in connection with the death of Green, who was pronounced dead at 1:21 p.m. Wednesday of apparent gunshot wounds. Green was found inside a vehicle that had hit the Magnolia Apartments in the 4400 block of Union Street.

Chief Deputy Coroner Chad Kel ley said Green’s body was sent to the state Medical Examiner’s Office at Little Rock for an autopsy.

The murder was the 14th of the year in the Pine Bluff city limits and the 20th homicide reported in Jefferson County.

Authorities said Green was apparently driving west on Union Street toward U.S. 79 (Blake Street) when someone fired numerous shots at the car, shooting out the rear window. Several bullets struck the left side of the trunk.

A block east of where the car came to rest, police located numerous shell casings near the curb, along with a coat. A handgun was reportedly found several blocks east of the scene, on Apple Street and that was also taken into evidence.

Davies said an investigation into the shooting is continuing and anyone with information should contact the Detective Division at 543-5111 or the Crime Hotline at 543-5110.

All calls will be kept confidential and a reward may available, Davies said.
