Lewis Yancy
The life of Lewis M. Yancy began on Aug. 5, 1918, in Moscow. He was the son of the late Lovie Hamilton and Thomas Yancy.
He attended school at the J.C. Corbin School in Pine Bluff. He did further study by taking a correspondence course at the Chicago Institute for Radio and Television Repair.
Lewis professed a hope in Christ at an early age at Centennial Missionary Baptist Church (Indiana Street).
He was the member of Sunday School Class No. 8. He served as a trustee, chairman of finance committee and a deacon. He was known for his fervent and passionate offertory appeals often quoting Malachi 3:8-10.
Brother Yancy was a long time stalwart member of the Indiana Street congregation. His name appears on the 1946 Cornerstone of the church building.
In 1926, it concerned him that the only black businesses in Pine Bluff were in alleys or near railroad tracks. “I couldn’t understand why the black folks didn’t have a business like the white folks,” Yancy said during an interview in 1988. He became the owner of Yancy’s Furniture and Appliances in 1946.
While Yancy was a happy and lighthearted man, there were times in his life that weren’t such laughing matters. It began in 1962, when he joined an organization that he said was risky to both his enterprise and his life. His involvement in that organization, the Pine Bluff Movement would forever change the face of local society.
Following the success of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.’s boycott of buses in Montgomery, similar forms of non-violent resistance quickly spread together parts of the country. Local residents and students from Arkansas AM&N College, now UAPB, joined forces to form the Pine Bluff Movement, which was designed to break down segregation.
Yancy said he joined the movement in order to provide better opportunities and open future doors for blacks.
In 1957, Lewis Yancy was united in holy matrimony to Queen Ester Thomas at the First Baptist Church in Lexa.
Deacon Yancy made his transition from this earthly life to eternal peace in Christ on Oct. 4, 2008.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife, Queen E. Yancy; sons, Bobby (Iris) Yancy of St. Louis, Mo., David (Willard) Yancy of Henderson, Nev., Donald (Alicia) Yancy of Dallas, Lewis (Monetha) Yancy and Cedric Yancy of Pine Bluff; daughters, Cynthia (Nathan) Douglas of Houston, Texas, Crystal Yancy both of Houston, Texas and Linda Yancy of Pine Bluff; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.
His services will be Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, at Indiana Street Baptist Church by Rev. L.K. Solomon at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Forrest Lawn Cemetery.
Visitation is today from 4-7:30 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home of Pine Bluff.
The body will lie in state at the church from 9:45 a.m. until time of service.
