Hughes is in Lincoln, Nebraska, making his presidential campaign speeches. 50 Years Ago October 15, 1958 LONDON — Britain’s commercial poster advertising organizations announced yesterday they are banning an anti-smoking poster issued by a government medical committee. They claimed the sign exaggerated the dangers of smoking. The poster shows only a cigarette — and the smoke curling from it forming the word, “cancer.” Charles H. Carl and Jeanette Purnell, owners. 25 Years Ago October 15, 1983 Formation of a nonprofit organization to restore a Cotton Belt Railroad locomotive at Oakland Park was announced yesterday. Old Engine 819 was built at the Cotton Belt shops in 1943 and used until about 1955. Cotton Belt officials deeded it to the city in 1955.
