65 Years Ago October 15, 1943 Professor W.B. Massey, superintendent of the public schools of Monticello, spent Friday in Pine Bluff visiting the schools and inspecting the school system here. Fire chief A.C. Breiner announced that Floyd Waymack and George Bass have been added to the fire department. Winters Julian is slowly improving from a critical illness resulting from appendicitis. Charles E. Hughes is in Lincoln, Nebraska, making his presidential campaign speeches. 50 Years Ago October 15, 1958 LONDON — Britain’s commercial poster advertising organizations announced yesterday they are banning an anti-smoking poster issued by a government medical committee. They claimed the sign exaggerated the dangers of smoking. The poster shows only a cigarette — and the smoke curling from it forming the word, “cancer.” Charles H. Carl and Jeanette Purnell, owners. 25 Years Ago October 15, 1983 Formation of a nonprofit organization to restore a Cotton Belt Railroad locomotive at Oakland Park was announced yesterday. Old Engine 819 was built at the Cotton Belt shops in 1943 and used until about 1955. Cotton Belt officials deeded it to the city in 1955.
