Joyce Smith
Joyce Corder Smith, 62, of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, died Monday, Oct. 13, 2008, at Trinity Village Medical Center.
She was born Aug. 1, 1946, in Searcy, Ark., to Harvey L. Cooper Sr. and Dorothy Marie Fitzgerald Cooper.
She was reared and educated in Charleston, Mo., graduating from St. Henry Catholic High School.
Mrs. Smith had worked as an insurance agent for Bankers Life and Causality Company, and was a legal secretary for 38 years. She worked 10 years for Attorney Sharon Fortenberry, before retiring.
She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and the Arkansas Legal Secretary Association. She was a notary public of Arkansas, and a licensed hairdresser for 25 years.
She was preceded in death by her father, Harvey L. Cooper Sr.; a daughter, Susan Renee Corder; a stepson, Clifton Maurice Corder Jr.; and a son, Michael Lewis Corder.
Survivors include a daughter, Jo Lynn Smith-Rupe and husband, Robert of Pine Bluff; grandson, Zachary David Smith of Pine Bluff; mother, Dorothy Marie Fitzgerald Cooper of Pine Bluff; former husband, Maurice Corder of Pine Bluff, (1967-1990) and their three children; Joe D. Smith of Pine Bluff, whom she married in 1998 until 2007; stepchildren, Donna and Danny Crow of Russellville, and their children, Bradley and Katy, Scott and Martha Christie of Little Rock; and their children, Thomas, Matthew, Sara and John, Sherrie Winter of Springfield, Mo., and her children Austin, Zachary, and Michael; brothers, Don Cooper of Pine Bluff; and his children, Rickey and Bobby, Harvey L. Cooper Jr. and Brenda of Sikeston, Mo., and their children, Bryan, Heather and Cody.
Mrs. Smith was a loving, caring woman, who loved and was loved by many, always thinking of others first. Through all the pain and suffering she endured, her strength and courage were amazing.
She was always grateful for everything and everyday.
She was the best friend anyone could have, and should have at least once in their lifetime.
She will never be forgotten and we are filled with wonderful memories she left with us.
A special thanks to our friends, Monica Cook Rushing, Tammy Hodges and Father Windsor. Also, we wish to thank Trinity Village Medical Center and Hospice for the tremendous care they gave to our love one.
The family will be at 7427 Suburbia Drive in Pine Bluff.
The family will receive friends Thursday, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Robinson’s.
Services by Ralph Robinson & Son will be 3:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 17, 2008, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Pine Bluff with the Rev. Dr. Walter Van Zandt Windsor officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Shirley Sands
HOT SPRINGS — Shirley Sands, 68, of Hot Springs, formerly of Pine Bluff, died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008, at National Park Medical Center.
She was born Jan. 28, 1940, in Pine Bluff, daughter of Joe Benjamin Hughes and Addie Henderson Hughes.
Mrs. Sands was reared and received her early education in Pine Bluff, graduating from Pine Bluff High School.
She worked for Central Moloney Inc. for almost 20 years.
Mrs. Sands was a member of Hazel St. Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Dr. Garry Hughes.
Survivors include her son, Steven Sands of Turkey; two daughters, Cindy Curtis and her husband, Gary of Hot Springs and Latonna “Toni” Sands of Healdsburg, Calif.; two brothers, Dr. Herman Hughes and his wife, Sandy of Lakeport, Calif., and Richard Hughes of Santa Fe, N.M.; sister, Retha White and her husband, Ronald of Pine Bluff; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008, in the chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son with Mr. Oran Burt officiating.
Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 5-7 p.m. at Robinson’s.

Ricky Scogin
MONTICELLO — Ricky Dale Scogin, 50, of Monticello, passed away Monday, Oct. 13, 2008, at his home.
He was born June 16, 1958, in Monticello.
He was a construction worker over 30 years ago when he became a quadriplegic and was a member of Shepherd’s Chapel Ministry.
Ricky was an avid deer hunter and Bible reader and was preceded in death by his father, J.T. Scogin.
Survivors include his mother, Reba Dell Sawyer Scogin of Monticello; one brother, John Norman Scogin and wife, Gail Chandler Scogin of Monticello; and two nephews, Rickey Wayne Scogin and Jay Hunter Scogin.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. today at Stephenson-Dearman Chapel. Burial in Shiloh Cemetery by Stephenson-Dearman.
