October 29, 1900

An unusually successful social event occurred at the Bluff City Club rooms Tuesday evening. The members gave their second weekly euchre and dance of the season. The attendance was quite large, there being twelve tables at the euchre. Four gentlemen tied for the prize among the gentlemen, but it fell to the lot of Mr. Lee Wertheimer. The prize was a pair of silk suspenders.

A splendid luncheon was served by the club caterer after the games and after that, the german was danced. Miles’ orchestra furnished the music and a truly delightful time was had by every one present.

On the candidates:

Richard Nixon has invented a new airplane. It is a remarkable craft with two left wings.

George Wallace has invented something, too. It is called a word launcher. This weapon is not lethal; it just stuns.

Wallace is a great shot with it.

Hubert Humphrey thinks he has designed a war-stopping device. Who knows?

Pat Paulson has an idea on how to end the war in Vietnam. It is the only one so far that would definitely work. Move to Mars.

Pine Bluff

David Pryor today favorably compared the Arkansas AM&N College Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) drill team with that of the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Dr. Lawrence A. Davis, president of the college, said, “We felt that since black men served their country in the armed forces in times of peace and war, the men who came to college here should have the opportunity to receive training to prepare them to serve as officers in the army of their country.”

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Retired actress Helen Hayes gave mixed reviews of her latest performance on a lecture tour.

Miss Hayes, 88, told an audience at Purdue University, “I cannot do without you,” but said earlier Thursday at a news conference that her standup gig made her a little nervous and she wanted to stay home and tend her roses.

“Old age is not something I’ve staved off, it’s something I’ve achieved,” she told the crowd of 3,000. “I’m having a ball.”
