DEATHS FOR THURSDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2008

Sylvester Duckworth

Mr. Sylvester Duckworth, 69, of Pine Bluff died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2008.

He was born at Gould, a son of the late Girtha and Isom Duckworth Sr.

Survivors include two brothers, Carnell Duckworth and Isom Duckworth Jr., both of Pine Bluff.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Brown Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. G.L. Ford officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Garden.

The family will be at 1214 S. Juniper St.

Margaret Joe

Margaret Howe Joe, 89, of Pine Bluff, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2008, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center after a long illness.

She was born in Philadelphia, Pa., in 1919, daughter of Chew Jong Howe and Louise Lum Howe.

Margaret was reared in Beulah, Miss., and received her early education in Memphis, Tenn.

She helped operate the family grocery in Crawfordsville, Ark., before and during World War II.

After marrying Harry Sy Joe in September 1948, they moved to Houston, Texas and later settled in Pine Bluff, Ark., in 1950. Margaret was co-owner of Joe’s Food Center from 1950-1967, and Sy-Joe’s Pagoda, the first Chinese restaurant in Pine Bluff, until her retirement in 1981.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Pine Bluff.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Helen Fong and Frances Woo; and a brother, Edwin Howe.

Survivors include her husband, Harry Sy Joe; son, Maury A. Joe and his wife, Carolyn of Pine Bluff; daughter, Dr. Cynthia A. Joe of Anchorage, Alaska; and granddaughter, Lianna Margaret Joe of Anchorage; four sisters, Grace Hoy of Silver Spring, Md., Martha Wing of Walls, Miss., Madelene Howe of Memphis, Tenn., and Marlene Neely of Gary, Ind.; two brothers, William Howe of Crawfordsville, and Raymond Howe of Mount Vernon, Wash.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Hospice Angels, the medical staff of Jefferson Regional Medical Center and the White Hall Nursing and Rehab Center.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First United Methodist Church, 200 W. Sixth Ave., Pine Bluff, Ark., 71601; or to any charity.

Visitation will be Friday, Oct. 31, 2008, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Ralph Robinson & Son.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008, at Robinson’s Chapel with Rev. David Moseley officiating. Interment follows in Graceland Cemetery.

Henry Sadler

Henry Davis Sadler, age 78, of Pine Bluff, died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 13, 1930, in Little Rock to the late Tom and Evelyn Harley Sadler.

He was raised in Rison, Ark., and later moved with his family to Pine Bluff.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Virginia Fletcher Sadler; his children, Henry Davis Sadler Jr. (Dave) and wife, Elizabeth of Pine Bluff, Andrew Neely Sadler and wife, Pam of Hot Springs, and Leeann Sadler of Little Rock; his grandchildren, Kristen Sadler, Adam Gates, Nathan Sadler, Michael Gates, Kaitlin Sadler, and Jessica Sadler.

Henry was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Tom Harley Sadler.

Henry attended Pine Bluff High School. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1948 and received his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base. He served with the 934 Signal Battalion, 5th Communication Group, for 18 months in the Korean Conflict at Taque and Pusan Air Force Bases. Upon his return from military service, Henry went to work for Arkansas Power and Light in the relay department. He retired in 1991 from Entergy (formerly AP&L) after 39 years of service.

Henry was an active member of Lakeside United Methodist Church in Pine Bluff. He served on the administrative board, board of trustees, and participated in numerous other activities within the church. It was often said, that if something needed to be repaired, Henry was the one to call. He had the knack for being able to fix anything — especially anything electrical. He was an avid racecar fan and enjoyed motorcycles.

Henry was active in all of his children’s activities, especially all of their sporting events, which he loved. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America program, served as a Scout Leader, and was honored by being inducted into the Order of the Arrow. Henry was adored by his children and grandchildren who considered him to be the world's greatest father and grandfather. He was a wonderful friend to all who knew him.

A visitation will be held at Ralph Robinson and Son Funeral Home in Pine Bluff Thursday, evening from 5 to 7 p.m.

A celebration service officiated by Rev. Jim Brooks will be held at Lakeside United Methodist Church Friday, Oct. 31, 2008, at 11 a.m.

Memorials may be made to Lakeside United Methodist Church, 1500 Olive St., Pine Bluff, Ark., 71601; or to a charity of choice.

Minnie Tanner

FORT SMITH — Minnie Lee Tanner, 57, of Fort Smith, died Friday at her home.

She was born Aug. 18, 1951, a daughter of the late Othur Tanner Sr. and Pauline Tanner in Pickens.

Survivors include two sons, Varner Davis and Saul Ricks Jr.; seven brothers; eight sisters; and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Watson District Headquarters at Mitchellville. Burial will be in Free Gift Cemetery at Dumas by Serenity Gardens Funeral Services at Dumas.

Visitation will be from 2-6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Lin Nixon

LITTLE ROCK — Lin E. “Buddy” Nixon, 88, of Little Rock, formerly of Pine Bluff, died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008, at Hospice Home Care Inpatient Center.

He was born June 12, 1920, in Pine Bluff, to the late Coy Madison Nixon and Willie Belle Mason Nixon.

Mr. Nixon was reared and received his early education in Pine Bluff, graduating from Pine Bluff High School. He served in the United States Army Air Forces in England during World War II. After the war, Mr. Nixon graduated from Hendrix College with a B.A. in business administration.

He began his career as a real estate agent with J.E. Boyce Agency. Mr. Nixon eventually owned and operated his own business, Lin Nixon Real Estate.

Mr. Nixon was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Greenbacks Investment Club. He was past president of the Pine Bluff Board of Realtors.

Survivors include his wife, Bobbye Moore Nixon, whom he married Nov. 2, 1952, in Pine Bluff; two daughters, Amanda Nixon White and her children, Alfred IV “Kes” and Sam, all of Little Rock, and Martha Nixon, her husband David McCullough and their children Miles and Claire McCullough, all of Little Rock; three brothers, Coy Nixon Jr. of Pine Bluff, Allen Nixon of Jonesboro and Dr. W.R. Nixon of Pine Bluff.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Friday, Oct. 31, 2008, at First Presbyterian Church of Pine Bluff with Rev. W. Lee Kinney and Rev. Ed Matthews officiating. A reception will follow in McColgan Hall. Burial will be at a later date.

Charles Davidson

VANCLEAVE, Miss. — Mr. Charles Belton (Jeff) Davidson, age 83, of Vancleave, Miss., passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2008.

Mr. Davidson was born on Dec. 5, 1924, in Leake County.

He served in the Navy during World War II. He retired from International Paper Company after 33 years.

Mr. Davidson moved to Vancleave from Pine Bluff, Ark., in 1980 and worked for NaCo and the Jackson County School System. He was an active member of the Vancleave United Methodist Church.

His greatest joys were his family, fishing, woodworking and white oak basket weaving.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Myrle and Walter Grady Davidson and granddaughter, Terry Rushing Hoffman.

Survivors include the love of his life and wife of 64 years, Annie Mae Hillman Davidson; daughter, Judieth Ann Mangham and husband, Fender Tucker; daughter, Sylvia Faith Davidson; son, Charles Michael Davidson and wife, Gail; son, Walter David Davidson and wife, Rhonda; daughter, Cynthia Kaye Hogan and husband, Bob; son, Ricky Lee Davidson and wife, Carol; daughter, Alicia Beth Green and husband, Randy; sisters, Bobby Whittington Riordan and husband, Bill; Jane McNair, Peggy Thaggard and husband, Joe Mack; grandchildren, Matthew, Ashley, Melanie, Donna, Amy, Charles Michael, Brian, Sarah, Haley, Lucas, William, Bob, Robert Michael, Donald, Lee, Daniel and Jacob; great-grandchildren, Jocco, Megan, Mallory, Madison, Leslie, Clayton, Gavin D., Brynn, Judie, Gavin, Kira, Kylan, Kalen, Konner and Breinton; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, church family and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday at Vancleave United Methodist Church. Burial was in Vancleave No. 1 Cemetery by Bradford O’Keefe Funeral Home at Ocean Springs, Miss.

James Taylor Jr.

CHICAGO — Funeral services for James (Snook) Taylor Jr., of Chicago, Ill., formerly of Pine Bluff, who died Oct. 22, in Chicago, will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at New Town MBC, Rev. Melvin Graves officiating.

He was born Oct. 25, 1936, in Pine Bluff, son of the late Mr. James Taylor Sr. and Nancy B. Anderson.

He received his education at C.P. Coleman High School. He was employed by Sullivan Vanish Paint Company until his retirement in 1995.

Survivors: wife, Lavern Taylor, Chicago; two daughters, Gloria Tillman, Pine Bluff, Janet (John) Lambert, Cedar Hill, Texas; five sisters, Flossie (Willie) Compton, Ella Anderson, Rachel (Lee) Holloway, Martha Anderson, Erma (Anthony) Bennett, all of Pine Bluff; two brothers, Earnest Anderson, Milwaukee, Wis., Floyd (Mary) Anderson Jr., Pine Bluff; one aunt, Dorothy Horne, Pine Bluff; grandchildren, Taylor Tillman, Morgan Tillman, both of Pine Bluff; special niece, Benita (Claud) Pridgeon, whom he reared.

Visitations may be made today 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be in St. Luke Cemetery on Princeton Pike at Pine Bluff by Perry Funeral Home.

The family will be at 53 W. Cypress Drive, Pine Bluff.

Martin Wingard

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas — Funeral arrangements are complete at the Zoeller Funeral Home for Martin “Randy” Wingard, who passed away in New Braunfels on Tuesday at the age of 60 years.

Mr. Wingard is survived by his wife, Sharon A. Wingard of New Braunfels; four sons, Daren Wingard of Tacoma, Wash., Donald Wingard and wife Penny of Chesapeake, Va., Heath Wingard and wife Heather of Mayflower, Ark., and Robert Yaney and wife Holly of Schertz, Texas; two daughters, Angela Yaney of New Braunfels and Jennifer DeVillviss and husband Travis of New Braunfels; six grandchildren, Chelsey and Bailey Wingard, Dakota, Gage and Trailee DeVillviss and Conner Yaney; and one brother, Thomas Wingard and wife Diane of Little Rock, Arkansas.

Mr. Wingard was preceded in death by his parents, Martin Thomas and Gladys Austin Wingard.

Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. today at the Zoeller Funeral Home with the family present from 5-7 p.m. to greet friends.

Services will be on Friday, Oct. 31, 2008, at 2 p.m. in the Zoeller Funeral Home chapel. Services will conclude in the chapel.

The family requests that memorial contributions be given to Hope Hospice of New Braunfels.

MONTICELLO — Odell Clary, 63, of Monticello died Wednesday. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Brown Funeral Home of Pine Bluff.

RISON — Larnie “L.B.” Thomas of Rison died Sunday at Jefferson Regional Medical Center. Funeral arrangements will be announced by P.K. Miller Mortuary at Pine Bluff.

MEMPHIS — Robert Clark Sr. of Memphis, formerly of DeWitt, Ark., died Tuesday at St. Francis Hospital at Memphis. Funeral arrangements will be announced by McKinzie/Wilson Funeral Home of Gould.

DALLAS — Elgin Roberts Jr., 18, of Dallas, formerly of Pine Bluff, died Tuesday. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Perry Funeral Home at Pine Bluff.
