WEEK FILLED TO BRIM WITH ELECTION, BUDGET-STRETCHING, STAGE PLAY

The 2008 election will be held Tuesday, the cooperative extension service will teach people how to stretch their budgets and “Murder in the Magnolias” will be performed at The Arts and Science Center for Southeast Arkansas this week.
Today is the final day of early voting before the general election Tuesday. More than 10,000 early voters cast ballots in Jefferson County by Saturday morning, an official said.
Voters will select a new president, Pine Bluff mayor, justices of the peace in Districts 10 and 12 and a county coroner, among others, in the general election. Tuesday, polls will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Early voting ends at 5 p.m. today.

The University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension service in Jefferson County will hold a workshop for people who want to learn about stretching their budgets.
For a fee of $10 per person, participants will learn the basics of successful financial management, including budget development, money management, wise use of credit and consumer protection.
Family and consumer sciences agents, Mary Ann Kizer of Jefferson County, Jane Newton of Lincoln County and Diane Clement of Cleveland County, will teach the financial management program from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Jefferson County Extension office, located at 500 Idaho St.

“Murder in the Magnolias,” a Southern farce, will be on the stage of the Catherine M. Bellamy Theater at the Arts and Science Center for Southeast Arkansas at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
Tickets for opening night (Thursday) are $15/member and $17/non-member, which include a reception after the performance. All other shows are $13/member and $15/non-member.

Charles Harrington, a native of Quitman, will conduct an acrylic workshop for the Pine Bluff Art League from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the Donald W. Reynolds Community Services Center, 201 W. Second Ave. Now residing in Bella Vista, Harrington has been a full-time artist and workshop instructor for the past five years. Only a few openings remain for this workshop. The cost is $65 for members of the Art League and $75 for non-members. The Pine Bluff Chapter of The Links Inc. is joining with the Jefferson Regional Medical Center in the fight against diabetes and heart disease. At noon Thursday, JRMC will host a free Learn at Lunch seminar (“Diabetes Prevention and Treatment”) in the Henslee Conference Center. Reservations are requested by calling 541-7635, and those registering are asked to mention The Links, according to a spokesman for The Links.
Arkansas native and singer, Charlotte Taylor, will share her passion for blues from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday as part of the Arts and Science Center for Southeast Arkansas’ monthly music series, Live@5. The cost for the evening is $5 and includes light refreshments. Details: Call Pat Hopkins at 536-3375.
The 22nd annual Buck Fever Festival will get under way at 6:30 p.m. Friday, with beauty pageants for children 13 months to 7 years at Banks. Festivities will continue Saturday with a cakewalk, arts and crafts, food concessions, kids’ games, cash prizes for the best racks on deer killed the morning of Friday and prizes for the best mounted antlers on display. A parade will begin at 11:30 a.m. Saturday with trophies in four divisions. Today is the deadline for those entering the talent show and pageants. Entry forms are available at the banks and schools in Warren, Hermitage and Hampton, the general store at Banks, the Greater Pine Bluff Chamber of Commerce and most Chamber of Commerce offices in South Arkansas.
The Kiwanis Club of Pine Bluff meets at noon Wednesday at the Pine Bluff Country Club. The speaker will be Dr. Hank Campbell, dean of the School of Business at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, to speak about the impact of UAPB and Southeast Arkansas College on the local economy.
Jefferson County Judge Mike Holcomb will hold a public hearing after the quorum court committees meet Wednesday evening to receive comments on the 2009 budget.
Pine Bluff Rotary Club will meet at noon Tuesday at the Pine Bluff Country Club. The speaker will Jim Caldwell, executive director of the United Way of Southeast Arkansas. Thursday, at noon at the same location, the West Pine Bluff Rotary Club will meet. The speaker will be Steve “Wild Man” Wilson of the Arkansas Game and Fish.
The Pine Bluff City Council will meet at 5:30 p.m. today the council chambers at the civic center.
The Jefferson County Health Department will give away free flu shots Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Pine Bluff Convention Center. Appointments won’t be necessary. The Pine Bluff clinic is a part of the one-day flu clinics conducted statewide by the Arkansas Health Department across the state. Participants are asked to bring their insurance cards, Medicaid, Medicare or AR Kids cards, however, there is no charge for people unable to pay.
