Jefferson County Circuit Judge Berlin Jones found probable cause Wednesday afternoon to hold Kawanee Campbell, 27, and Joe McKnight, 39, on suspicion of theft of property, pending the filing of formal charges, and set bond for both at $5,000.
Reading from an affidavit from police, Deputy Prosecutor Nicole Pugh said that a theft was reported at Sears on Nov. 3.
Pugh said that on that day, employees on a smoke break outside The Pines Mall reported seeing a woman running across the parking lot with an armful of clothes and get into a tan Chevrolet. When police arrived, they saw the car returning to the parking lot.
After receiving permission to search the vehicle, officers discovered $1,357.50 worth of new clothing inside, Pugh said.
The witnesses also reportedly identified Campbell as the woman who ran across the parking lot and an employee of Sears identified McKnight as having been with Campbell, Pugh said.
Both were appointed public defenders by the court told to return to court Dec. 1.
