SINGING, HISTORY, LIGHTS BRING PB TO LIFE

Children from Africa will sing, a dedication for an historic marker will be held and the opening of the Enchanted Land of Lights and Legends will usher in the holiday season this week.

The world-renowned African Children’s Choir will perform at the First Baptist Church at Pine Bluff at 7 p.m. Friday.

Through their voice and music, the children of the choir are taking Africa to the rest of the world. They are the victims of a terrible pandemic, but they are also the promise and future of Africa. For more than 21 years, the African Children’s Choir has been performing throughout North America and the United Kingdom. Details: Call Rosalind Mouser at 535-9000 or call the church at 534-4741.

A dedication of the St. Andrew’s Historical Marker will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the amphitheater at Saracen Landing with remarks from civic leaders and the dedication committee.

St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, one of seven black Episcopal missions in the state, was organized in 1906 under the auspices of Trinity Episcopal Church. The church was disbanded in 1968 when the building was demolished for construction of the Martha Mitchell Expressway, and members were subsequently welcomed into Trinity and Grace Episcopal churches. In Star City, tickets will be available beginning today for the Star City Singing Christmas Tree. This year’s program, “Tiny King,” will be presented at 7 p.m. Dec. 11-14. To request the free tickets, participants should send a stamped, self-addressed envelope to First Baptist Church, Attention: Polly, P.O. Box 368, Star City, Ark. 71667, or tickets may be picked up at the church office, 200-210 W. Wiley St.

If there are tickets that will not be used, the holders are asked to call (870) 628-3122 since there is always a long waiting list.

The grand opening of the 12th annual Enchanted Land of Lights and Legends is scheduled for Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Regional Park. The light display will be available for viewing immediately after the special activities, which will feature the Dollarway High School Band and an opportunity to walk through the display. The lights will be available for viewing from 6 to 9 each evening through Dec. 31.

Admission is free, however, volunteers are stationed at the end of the display to accept donations. Anyone who makes a $10 donation will receive a souvenir ornament.

  • Pioneer Days, a Western-style Wild West town, will spring up and around the Arts and Science Center for Southeast Arkansas from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday to kick off the opening of “Frederic Remington Makes Tracks,” on exhibit Saturday through Jan. 24. There will be horses and other animals, cowboys, Native American dancers and mountain men. There will be a display of antique guns and knives. Old-fashioned hearth cooking will be demonstrated, and storytellers will be there.

  • The John McLinn Ross Players at the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff will open the theatrical season with “Home” by Samm-Art Williams. The play will be on stage in the Hathaway-Howard Fine Arts Center auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and at 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday with student matinees available (as booked) Tuesday through Thursday.   • In recognition of National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, Whispering Knoll Assisted Living, 6812 S. Hazel St., will offer free memory screenings. The event, scheduled from 9 a .m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, is in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America and the Southeast Arkansas Center on Aging. Details: Call 534-1583.

  • Detective Billy Reed of the Vice and Narcotics Division of the Pine Bluff Police Department, will be the speaker at the crime victims’ support group meeting Wednesday. The meeting is scheduled from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Area Agency on Aging of Southeast Arkansas, 709 E. Eighth Ave. Reed’s subject will be “Drug Investigations.”

  • Wednesday at noon, the Kiwanis Club of Pine Bluff will meet at the Pine Bluff Country Club. Circuit judge-elect Earnest Brown, who will serve as juvenile judge, will discuss the juvenile court.

  • Pine Bluff School Board will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Jordan-Chanay Administration Center.

  • Jim Davis, Rotary district governor, will be the guest at the Pine Bluff Rotary Club at noon Tuesday at the Pine Bluff Country Club. The West Pine Bluff Rotary Club meets at noon Thursday in the same location. The speaker will be Phil McBee, discussing the Pine Bluff Entrepreneurship Collaborative.

  • The Pine Bluff City Council will meet at 5:30 p.m. today at the council chambers of the Pine Bluff Civic Center.

  • Early voting begins Tuesday for the runoff election Nov. 25 to decide races for Pine Bluff mayor, city treasurer, aldermen in the 3rd and 4th wards of Pine Bluff and a Redfield alderman’s seat. Early voting will be held at the Jefferson County Courthouse.
