THE BLUFF LEARNS BALLROOM MOVES AT SEARK

Get out those blue suede shoes and head over to Southeast Arkansas College Monday nights for an introduction to steps from the past.

Richard Berry and LaMeike Jenkins (from left), Tina and Ken Butler, and Byron Evans and Brittany Bradford learn ballroom dancing from Kathy Majewska (far right) recently at Southeast Arkansas College. Pine Bluff Commercial/Mike Adam

Kathy Majewska teaches swing, waltz, tango and cha-cha to her students, who range from college students to married couples looking to spend time together.

On a recent Monday night there were three couples circling the floor to a song whose lyrics glide along with the bodies: “Dance a good old sweet-heart waltz.”

From a hip-hop dancer, to a nursing student, to a couple who loves learning all the right moves, Majewska’s students were sympathetic to new comers and good at working with each other when changing pairs.

Majewska said most first time dancers are too “drapey.”

“When they have to be in a frame, it’s hard,” she said.

But Majewska’s patience and practice drills can help students over the learning curve, as well as ease insecurities in attempting to look graceful.

And she’s managed to balance out the class with both genders.

“The main thing is, I got the guys into it,” Majewska said.

The fall semester boasts three males and four females.

It didn’t take long for Byron Evans, a student, to catch on to a new dance move.

“It’s just a natural thing,” he said. “I always enjoyed it growing up.”

Prospective students can sign up for the spring semester class now at SEARK.
