PITTSBURGH — Pauline Rugh, former Penn State co-ed and the first woman coach of a western Pennsylvania high school football team, enjoyed her gridiron work at the Bell Township school, even if her boys lost all eight of their games.

“Winning isn’t everything,” she said. “I got a lot out of the job and I am also pretty sure the boys did. They took everything in good spirit and never once forgot I was a girl.”

  • WASHINGTON — “I just try to move the ball and let the record fall where it may.”

So spoke Jim Brown, the Cleveland Brown’s great runner, after his team had beaten the Washington Redskins in a 20-10 thriller yesterday.

The 225-pound fullback, in his second year as a pro, rushed for 152 yards in 27 carries for a season total of 1,163 yards. This topped the record set by Philadelphia Eagles’ Steve Van Buren who totaled 1,146 yards rushing in 1949.

Two local firms, MK Distributors Inc. and the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of South Arkansas, have made donations to the fund-raising campaign for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.

George Makris, president of MK Distributors, presented an $8,000 check this week to Dr. Lloyd V. Hackley, chancellor of the campus here. His firm has pledged $10,000 to the university.

Sam Thompson Jr., executive vice president of Coca-Cola, pledged $15,000 from his firm.

The university and its Development Council launched a five-year fund-raising drive in September to generate $1.5 million in endowment funds and $250,000 in annual support to the school.
