Joe Bullard

Mr. Joe Luster Bullard, 56, of Pine Bluff did Monday, Dec. 8, 2008.

He was born in Tarry to the late Lucille and Obie Bullard Sr.

His survivors include sons, Telley Lowe of Dallas, Alvin Allen and Kendrick Bullard, both of Pine Bluff; daughters, Lesia Fuqua of Louisville, Ky., Dawn Martinez, Kimberly Evans, Andrea Bullard and Jasmine Bullard, all of Pine Bluff; brothers, James Brantley, Dave Brantley, Napoleon Brantley and Herman Brantley, all of New Haven, Conn., Carl Bullard of Detroit, Mich., Oscar Bullard Sr., and Obie Bullard Jr., both of Pine Bluff; sisters, Versie Johnson of McGehee, Dorothy Thomas of St. Louis, Mo., and Dorothy Bullard of Tarry; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

His services will be Saturday, Dec., 12, 2008, at Rose Hill Baptist Church by Rev. G.L. Ford at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Bright Star Cemetery in Tarry.

Visitation is today from 6-7 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home of Pine Bluff.

The body will lie in state at the church from 9:15 a.m. until time of service.

The family will be at 6006 Cedar St., Pine Bluff, Ark.

Willie Davenport

Funeral services for Willie “Jew” Davenport, 91, of Pine Bluff, who died Dec. 3 at JRMC will be Saturday, 11 a.m., Grace Temple MBC, Rev. Amelio P. Howard, pastor.

He was born Jan. 1, 1917, in Readland, Ark., son of the late Bass and Lula Coleman Davenport.

He was a member of Grace Temple MBC, where he served as a deacon, chairman of the board, church building fund, advisor over the church choir, and Sunday School teacher. He was a Mason and member of Lodge 10.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Clifton, Johnny, Charley Davenport; six sisters, Winnie, Maggie, Annie, Flenoil, Rosie, Louise; one son, Willie Davenport Jr.; wives, Leonla C. Thomas and Lula Hunter.

He worked for many years as a service station attendant and truck driver and with Canton China until his retirement.

Survivors one daughter, Willie M. Butler, Pine Bluff; one stepson, Curlee Smith, Toledo, Ohio; five grandchildren, Diane Taylor, Pine Bluff, Faye Davenport and Sandra Davenport, both of Chicago, Ill., Robin Davenport, Romeoville, Ill., Sharon Davenport, Pearl, Miss.; godson, Larry Weekly, Pine Bluff; two sisters-in-law, Sarah Davenport, Little Rock and Minnie Davenport, Detroit, Mich.; nine great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Visitations may be made today, 4 until 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

The remains will lie in state at the church Saturday 10 a.m. until funeral time.

Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery at Detroit, Mich. Perry Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Floyd Dodd

Floyd C. Dodd, 67, of Pine Bluff died Tuesday at his home.

He was born July 9, 1941, at Rison, a son of the late Woodrow and Eunice Browning Dodd.

He was a retired carpenter.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Kathryn Harris Dodd of Pine Bluff; one daughter, Salena R. Carter of Pine Bluff; two sisters, Thelma Hartsfield of California and Lila Wingard of Woodlawn; and three grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Cremation arrangements are by Buie Funeral Home of Rison.

Andrew Gilchrest Sr.

Mr. Andrew Gilchrest Sr., 74, of Pine Bluff died Friday, Dec. 5, 2008.

He was born in Somerville, Tenn., to the late Willie and Gladys Gilchrest.

His survivors include sons, Herbert Gilchrest, Andrew Gilchrest Jr., Maurice Gilchrest and Anthony Johnson, all of Memphis, Tenn.; stepsons, Lee Treadwell Jr., Richmond, Texas, Marcus Sims of Sherwood; daughter, Gloria Gilchrest of Memphis; stepdaughter, Charlotte Ester of Pine Bluff; brother, George Gilchrest of Memphis; sister, Fannie Pierce of Patterson, N.J.; 21 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

His services will be Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, at Brown Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Don Zell Jones Sr., at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Visitation will be today from 6-7:30 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home of Pine Bluff.

Walter Johnson Jr.

Mr. Walter William Johnson Jr., 65, of Pine Bluff died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008.

He was born in Greenwood, Miss., to Rosena Binion of Greenwood, Miss., and the late Walter Johnson Sr.

His survivors include wife, Bobbie Johnson of Pine Bluff; sons, Johnnie Walton of Memphis, Elbert Bolden, Melvin Fisher, Charles Fisher, James Fisher, Tony Fisher and Derrick Johnson; daughters, Gwendolyn Brown and Kendra Johnson, all of Pine Bluff; brother, Ira Johnson; sisters, Rosie Jones, Arnette Gibson, all of Greenwood, Miss., I.V. Martin of Memphis, Katherine Williams of St. Louis, Mo., and Bessie Glass of Jackson, Miss.; 21 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

His services will be Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, at Rose Hill Baptist Church by Rev. John Gibson at 12:30 p.m. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Visitation will be today from 5-7 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home of Pine Bluff.

Jewel Morgan

Mrs. Jewel Rosalyn Morgan, lovingly known as “Missionary Morgan” and “Precious Jewel” was born on Nov. 3,1917, to the union of Arthur and Genie Jackson McDowell Sr. in Pine Bluff, Ark.

Mother Morgan attended Merrill High School and later graduated from the American Schools of Chicago with honors. She was a licensed cosmetologist for many years. Later Mother Morgan expanded her learning by attending and graduating from AM&N College (presently the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff) in 1967, with a degree in elementary education. Mother Morgan continued her formal education at the University of Arkansas, Little Rock and at Conway and received a special education certification.

Jewel R. McDowell was united in holy matrimony with Walter Morgan on Nov. 10, 1935, in Pine Bluff, Ark. Their union was blessed with two daughters and two sons.

Jewel Morgan was a dedicated school teacher in the Stuttgart and Watson Chapel School Districts. Shortly before retirement in 1984, she and her husband Walter co-founded a Christian school. Their lifelong dream of developing such a project, became a reality when Aenon Bethesda Christian School opened its doors. As a result of the work done at Aenon Bethesda Christian School, the Morgans established the ABCS Scholarship Assistance fund for students attending the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

In Mrs. Morgan’s leisure, she enjoyed teaching others how to play the piano, writing and singing. Her published works included: “Cooking With Love,” “Sing Happy Children Sing,” “Born to do a Work for the Master,” her autobiography, and “Live and Learn: A New Beginning.”

During her life time Mother Morgan gave tirelessly of her time and energy to her church work, students, friends and family. She received many honors and award throughout her life, such as a Proclamation from the city of Pine Bluff, proclaiming Feb. 23, 2007, as Mrs. Jewel R. Morgan Recognition Day and was crowned the Queen of Davis Life Care Center.

Mrs. Morgan departed this life on, Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff, Ark. She was preceded in death by her cherished husband of 58 years, Walter Morgan Sr.; her devoted elder son, Walter Michael Morgan Jr.; two brothers, Milton and Herman McDowell, both of East St. Louis, Ill., and her loving son-in-law, Frank Miller, of Milwaukee, Wis.

Jewel Morgan leaves to honor and cherish her wonderful memory three children, Jeannie (Henry Sr.) Matlock and Robert (Chondra) Morgan of Pine Bluff, Ark., and Cynthia Miller of Milwaukee, Wis.; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the Breath of Life Church. The body will lie in state from 10 a.m. until time of service. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, Cedar Grove section.

Family hour 4 to 5 p.m. and visitation 5 to 6 p.m. will be today, Dec. 12, 2008, at Christian Way Funeral Home.

Norman Pugh

Mr. Norman Pugh, 95, of Pine Bluff died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008.

He was born in Meroney to the late George and Rosie Pugh.

His survivors include sons, Jessie Pugh of San Francisco, Calif., Edward Pugh, Leo Pugh, Kenneth Pugh, Dewayne Pugh and Dwight Pugh, all of Pine Bluff; daughters, Joyce Hawthorne of Citrus Heights, Calif., Chessie Smith of San Padlo, Calif., Wilma Branch of Pittsburg, Calif., Virgil Noble, Betty Pointer and Wanda Williams, all of Pine Bluff; 50 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

His services will be Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, at Kings Highway Baptist Church by Rev. Walter C. May at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be in Bellwood Cemetery.

Visitation is today from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home of Pine Bluff.

The body will lie in state at the church from 1:45 p.m. until time of service.

The family will be at 24 N. Haley St., Pine Bluff, Ark.

James Spain

James Thomas Spain, age 81, of Pine Bluff, passed away Monday, Dec. 8, 2008.

Born June 24, 1927 at Smackover, J.T. was a son of the late Roy C. Spain and Mary Ruie McNeill Spain.

He graduated from Smackover High School in 1945 and received a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from LeTourneau Technical College. He served in the United States Navy during World War II.

A resident of Pine Bluff since 1956, J.T. was plant engineer for Weyerhaeuser Paper Company for 28 years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he had served on the administrative board. A 50-year member of Quapaw Masonic Lodge No. 730, he was also a member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry and the Sahara Shrine. J.T. was an umpire in the Little League for over 20 years and had served of the board of directors for the National Little League in Pine Bluff. He was an avid outdoorsman, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golf.

J.T. was predeceased on Nov. 27, 2008, by his wife of 58 years, Maurice Elder Spain; and a daughter, Deana Spain. A brother, Roy Spain also predeceased him.

Survivors include a son, James R. Spain and wife Virginia of Ashdown; a daughter, Cathy Spain Glover and husband Rick of Clarendon; two brothers, Harold D. Spain of Herndon, Va., and Alton L. Spain of Orange Park, Fla.; and his grandchildren, Rickey Glover Jr., Suzanne Spain Ward and husband Josh, Sarah Catherine Glover, James Thomas Spain, II, Ryne Elder Glover, and Caroline Shepherd Spain.

Funeral services will be Saturday, 2 p.m. at Fuller Hale-South Funeral Chapel with Rev. David Moseley officiating. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery.

Visitation will be today from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Jessie Poe

ALTHEIMER — Graveside services for Jessie Mae Poe, 61, of Altheimer, who died Dec. 4 at JRMC, will be Saturday, 2 p.m. Miller Memorial Cemetery by Perry Funeral Home, Rev. Charles McIntosh officiating.

She was born Nov. 1, 1947, in Fordyce, Ark., daughter of the late Jesse and Mary Lee Poe.

She was a graduate of Martin High School, a certified nursing assistant, member of the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management State Emergency Response Commission, volunteer firefighter in Wabbaseka.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, two sisters.

Survivors two sons, Mark Anderson (Rose) and Tyrone Bailey (Leslie), both of Altheimer; two brothers, Ezekiel Johnson (Linda) Fort Smith, Ark., Calvin Poe, DeWitt, Ark.; three sisters, Queen (George) Jackson, Tracy, Calif., Margaret Whitmore (Lee), Altheimer, Ark., Pauline Poe, Sherrill, Ark.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Catherine Garrett

DUMAS — Catherine Camille Freeman Garrett, 66, of Dumas, Ark., was born June 23, 1942, in Pine Bluff, Ark., to the late Forrest Freeman and Catherine Shelton. Camille passed away Dec. 9, 2008, in Little Rock, Ark.

Camille retired from Arkansas Department of Correction.

Survivors are two sons, Barry Boren of Star City, Ark., and Bryan Boren of Dumas, Ark.; daughter, Kim Norris of Dallas, Texas; brother, Bill Freeman of Brandon, Miss.; and six grandchildren, Sommer Norris Riehn, Hayley Norris, Samuel Boren, Seth Boren, Hannah Gray Boren and Jessie Boren and her loving cat, Sugar Me Me.

Visitation held on Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, from 5-7 in the Griffin Funeral Home Chapel.

FORDYCE — Ruby Mae Lynn Parham, 95, of Fordyce died Wednesday at St. John’s Place at Fordyce.

She was born Jan. 21, 1913, a daughter of the late James N. Lynn and Birthel Johnson Lynn.

Survivors: son, Reece Parham of Fayetteville; daughters, Dorothy Parham of Hot Springs and Ruth Harrison of Fordyce; brothers, James Lynn and William D. Lynn, both of Fordyce; sister, Ilene Meyers of Oklahoma City; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Curtis Briggs

MONTICELLO — Curtis Briggs, 67, of Monticello died Monday at Chicot County Memorial Hospital at Lake Village.

He was born Jan. 25, 1941, at Monticello, a son of the late Rev. William T. Briggs and Emma Briggs.

Survivors: sons, Myron Briggs and Derrick Briggs, both of Monticello, Kevin Courtney of Dallas and Ramon Turner of Dermott; daughter, Angelia Spriggs of Florida; and brothers, Edward Briggs of Acton, Mass., Jessie Briggs of Mount Morris, Mich., William Briggs of Dermott, Virgil Briggs of Monticello and Bennie Briggs of Pine Bluff.

R.J. Matthews

MONTICELLO — R.J. Matthews, 94, of Monticello, died Sunday at Drew Memorial Hospital.

He was born May 2, 1914, in Drew County.

He retired from Burlington Industries and was a member of Campground AME Church.

Survivors include four sons, Elvin Matthews of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Raymond Matthews of Pine Bluff, Larry Matthews and George Matthews, both of Monticello; two daughters, Marilyn Matthews Ridgell of Sherwood and Mary Jean Matthews of Des Arc; 18 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today at Stephenson-Dearman Funeral Home at Monticello. Burial will be in Campground Cemetery.

Linda Wilkes

MONTICELLO — Linday Kay Wilkes of Monticello died Tuesday.

She was born Oct. 15, 1954, a daughter of Smedia Wilkes Sr. and Mary Wilkes of Monticello.

Other survivors include six brothers and five sisters.

Memorial services will be held from 1-1:30 p.m. Saturday at Stephenson-Dearman Funeral Home of Monticello.

J.K. Goins Sr.

SHERIDAN — J.K. (Jake) Goins Sr. of Sheridan, Ark., was born March 16, 1918, in Star City, Ark., the son of the late William Alexander and Martha Susanne Keahey Goins.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Sheridan, a member of JJ Deer Camp, had retired from J.A. Riggs as a diesel mechanic and had served in the Navy during World War II.

Mr. Goins died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008, at Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock at the age of 90.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Betsy Goins and brothers, Jessie Lee, James Edward (Red), Elmer Eldridge (Chick), Homer Travis, Willie Woodrow (Bill), sisters, Ella Mae, Dorothy (Dot) and Mary Elizabeth.

Survivors: son, J.K. Goins Jr. and wife Karen of Sheridan; daughter, Zoe Hines and husband Gary of Sheridan; grandsons, J.K. (Jace) Goins III, John Robinette, Chris Goins, Scott Hines; great-grandsons, Haze and Ian;

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, at Memorial Gardens Funeral Home in Sheridan with Rev. Bruce Bennett officiating. Burial will follow at Philadelphia Cemetery in Prattsville.

Floye Chambliss

STAR CITY — Floye Marie Youngblood Chambliss, 86, of Star City died Wednesday at Star City Nursing Center.

She was born July 21, 1922 in Yell County to the late Emzie and Ora Anderson Youngblood.

She attended Tyro Schools. She was a homemaker and also worked at Byrd Manufacturing. She was a member of Holly Springs Missionary Baptist Church where she was in the Ruth Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Mt. Home Extension Homemakers Club.

Also preceding her in death were two brothers, Herman Youngblood, Billy Floyd Youngblood; and three sisters, Lois Jewel Youngblood, Daisy Dean Cook and Verlin Wells.

Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Troy Lee Chambliss; one son, Troy R. Chambliss and wife Mary; two daughters, Margie White and husband Leon, Melba Kaye Chambliss, all of Star City; three grandchildren, Gene Chambliss and wife Lori, Mike Brock and wife Melissa; Carol Lynn Hankins and husband Johnny;12 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Griffin Funeral Chapel in Star City. Brother J.C. Patterson and Brother Doug Criss will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Home Cemetery.

Jerry Rainer

STAR CITY — Jerry L. Rainer, 67, of Star City died Wednesday at Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff.

He was born Feb. 5, 1941, in Vicksburg, Miss.

Mr. Rainer was a retired mechanic for Levi Strauss and was a member of Holly Springs Missionary Baptist Church.

Jerry was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt, fish, garden and help anybody who needed help, and will be missed by countless people.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Clara Joan and Sam Ellison of Star City; his wife, Mamie Worley Klutts Rainer of Star City; one son, Jerry Edward Rainer, also of Star City; two daughters, Nina Collins of Little Rock and Cherie Deere of Van Buren. Other survivors include two stepsons, Arvin Klutts of Harrison, Andy Klutts of Piggs, Okla.; two stepdaughters, Patty Krueger of Washington State, Jean Trammell of Harrison; and a stepsister, Caroline Younger of Whorton, Texas. Surviving grandchildren include Joshua Owen, Justin Owen, Jerrica Harris, Austyn Deere, Robert Klutts, Alan Klutts, Carl Klutts, Hunter Klutts, Dakota Klutts, Maranda Klutts, Kimberly Krueger, Seth Krueger, Amanda Trammell and Katyln Trammell.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Holly Springs Missionary Baptist Church near Star City with Brother J.C. Patterson officiating.

Luther Darrough

WILMAR — Luther Darrough, 83, of Wilmar died Monday at Monticello Health Care.

He was born Jan. 31, 1925, a son of the late Tom Darrough and Opehlia Johnson Darrough.

Survivors: his wife, Ruby Darrough; four daughters, Willo Allen of Pine Bluff, Etha Darrough and Eloise Dailey, both of Star City, and Dorothy Watson of Cornerville; four stepchildren, Ann Martin and Donnie Rayford, both of Wilmar, Larry Rayford of Monticello and Gregory Rayford of Alabama; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Stephens Baptist Church at Cornerville. Burial will be in Cornerville Cemetery by Hammons Funeral Home at Warren.

Horace (H.G.) Barnett of Pine Bluff died Wednesday at Jefferson Regional Medical Center. Funeral arrangements will be announced by P.K. Miller Mortuary.
