Horace Barnett Sr.
Horace Greeley Barnett Sr. (H.G.) was born Jan. 7, 1916, in Rison, Ark., the oldest child of Ben and Laura Barnett.
Mr. Barnett married Elizabeth Kinsey on March 7, 1937, in Forrest City, Ark. This was an enduring union of 68 years. To this union six children were born.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Barnett; his son, Horace G. Barnett Jr.; his daughter, Eula Barnett; and a a grandchild, Charles Freeman Jr.; four brothers, Clifton Barnett, John T. Barnett, Ben Barnett, Fred Barnett; and two sisters, Jane Barnett and Frances Powell.
His early education was in the public schools of Rison. He received a bachelor’s of science degree from AM&N College (now the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff), in 1948. He received a master of science education, Syracuse University in 1951. He was a member of St. James United Methodist Church and also a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.
During his tenure at AM&N/UAPB, Mr. Barnett wore many hats as follows: professor, counselor, dean of students, director of placement and director of financial aid. In addition, he served his community as a founding member of the of board of the Pine Bluff Citizens Boys and Girls Club. He was a notary public for Jefferson County for many years and was the only black salesperson for the Smart Chevrolet Company. He served on the Negro Park Commission under Mayor Lites.
He will be lovingly remembered and cherished by two sons, Richard “Tony” Barnett of Pine Bluff, Ark., and Dr. David Barnett (Eilena) of Washington, D.C.; one daughter, Mrs. Horice Barnett Colen of Jackson, Miss.; and one sister, Mrs. Estella Clark of Pine Bluff, Ark.; one brother, Oscar Barnett of Flint, Mich.; seven grandchildren, Horace (Valencia) Barnett III, Lisa (Jefferey) Moore of Jackson, Miss., Joseph Colen Jr. of Jackson, Miss., Andrea B. (Earnest) Fisher of Colorado Springs, Colo., Patricia (Darryl) Tripp of Memphis, Tenn., David Barnett Jr. of Washington, D.C., and Laura Barnett of Pine Bluff, Ark.; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at the St. James United Methodist Church with the Rev. Henry “Hank” Wilkins IV officiating. Interment will be at the Cedar Grove section of Graceland Cemetery by the P.K. Miller Mortuary.
Visitation will be from 5 until 7 today at the mortuary.
Mr. Barnett will lie in repose at the church Friday from noon until 1 p.m.
Augusta Clark
Graveside services for Augusta Mays Clark, 66, of Pine Bluff, who died Monday at her home, will be Friday at noon in Henson Memorial Cemetery by Perry Funeral Home.
She was born June 29, 1942, at the Lake Dick community near Altheimer.
She received her education at the Altheimer Training School.
She was the widow of Sam Clark. She was preceded in death by her parents, Roosevelt and Jamie L. Oliver; grandparents, McElree and Ardelia Mays, who raised her.
Survivors: one brother, Albert L. Anderson, Pine Bluff; four sisters, Lovain Carpenter, Fort Worth, Texas, Ann L. (Alvin) Collins, Hot Springs, Ark., Alleen Scott, Milwaukee, Wis., Ardella Bearden, Pine Bluff; two aunts, Edna Russell, Pine Bluff, Armenthia Lewis, Hot Springs, Ark.; great uncle, William Perry, Little Rock, Ark.
Visitations may be made Friday 10 a.m. until noon at the funeral home.
Charles Hogan
Charles Bill Hogan, 80, a resident of Pine Bluff, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 25, 1928, in Pine Bluff, he was a son of Charles Wilson and Mary Dean Phillips Hogan.
Mr. Hogan was reared and educated in Pine Bluff. He was a graduate of Pine Bluff High School. He was a Korean War veteran of the United States Army. Mr. Hogan owned and operated Pine Bluff Iron Works for 47 years. He was a member of Lakeside United Methodist Church. He enjoyed golf and woodworking.
Charles William Hogan married Bobbie Nipper on Jan. 4, 1974, in Pine Bluff.
Mr. Hogan was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Pattye Lambert.
Survivors include his wife, Bobbie Hogan of Pine Bluff; two daughters, Mary Elise Rial of Olive Branch, Miss., and Donna Marlene DeLaPorte; stepson Glen Vasser of Prescott; stepdaughter, Teresa Bridgman of Little Rock; three grandchildren, Marti Hall, Brady Powell, and Vicki Vasser; one great-grandson, Ian Hogan.
The visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today, Dec. 18, 2008, at Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, 2008, in the chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son with Rev. Jim Brooks officiating. Burial will follow in Graceland Cemetery under the direction of Ralph Robinson & Son.

Percy Holley
DUMAS — Percy Holley, 39, of Dumas died Saturday at Baptist Medical Center at Little Rock.
He was a son of James Holley and Delois Holley, both of Dumas.
He was the lead singer for the gospel singing group, Percy and The Holley Family.
Other survivors: two brothers, James R. Holley Jr. of Marion and Octavious Stovall of Dumas; and four sisters, Helen Holley, Adrione Hall, Kerry Nolan and Stacy Joiner, all of Dumas.
Funeral services: noon Saturday at Union Baptist Missionary Baptist Church. Burial: Jerusalem Cemetery by Mc-Kinzie/Wilson Funeral Home of Gould.
Visitation: 5-7:30 p.m. Friday at New Jerusalem Church.
Thenious Maxwell
GREENBRIER — Thenious Frauline (Holloway) Maxwell, born June 9, 1918, in Wooster, Ark., daughter of Little Berry Ether and Mary Ella (Clements) Holloway, died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008, in Greenbrier, Ark.
Thenious is preceded in death by her husband, Chester Marvin Maxwell; son, David Edwin Maxwell; and one grandchild, Brian Lee Maxwell.
She is survived by sister, Modenia Smith of Wooster; eight sons, Marvin and Jackie Maxwell of Lonoke, Bill Maxwell of Wooster, Jim Maxwell of Wooster, Paul and Anna Kemp of Conway, Tommy and Sally Kemp of Carlisle, Cecil and Patsy Maxwell of Wooster, G.E. and Brenda Maxwell of Houston, and Danny and Gloria Maxwell of Atkins; four daughters, Chris and Don Fitzhugh of Pine Bluff, Lou and Billy Madden of Temple, Texas, Donna and Dan Rutherford of Greenbrier, and Tina and Joe Guy of Canton, Texas; daughter-in-law, Carol Maxwell of Wooster; 37 grandchildren; 63 great-grandchildren; and 25 great-great-grandchildren.
Thenious was a member of Wooster Baptist Church. She loved quilting, fishing, word find puzzles, and going to the Senior Citizens Center. She was a loving mother, wife, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother and sister. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, 2008, at Wooster Baptist Church, officiated by Bro. Phillip Drennan. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery in Shady Grove. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren.

John Langston Sr.
HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE — John Tyler Langston Sr., 70, of Hot Springs Village, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008, at St. Joseph Hospital in Hot Springs.
He was born April 18, 1938, in Drew County, Ark.
Survivors include his wife, Gail McFall Langston of Hot Springs Village; one son, John Langston Jr. of Hudson, Colo.; one daughter, Jenny Langston-Chavez of El Dorado Hills, Calif.; one stepson, Michael Joseph Moses of San Antonio, Texas; one stepdaughter, Lisa Moses of San Antonio, Texas; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Stephenson-Dearman Chapel. Burial in Lone Sassafras Cemetery by Stephenson-Dearman.
Visitation 1 p.m. Friday until service time at the funeral home.
Esther Grieff
MONTICELLO — Esther Beatrice Grieff, age 76, of Monticello, passed away Monday, Dec. 15, 2008, at JRMC.
She was born Oct. 31, 1933, in Monticello.
She was retired from UAM as custodian and was Baptist.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert Wilson Smith Jr. and Velma Boyd Smith.
Survivors include three sons, Kenneth Tomlinson of Oklahoma City, Okla., Doug Tomlinson of Monticello and Micke Tomlinson of Jacksonville, Fla.; her brother, Paul Smith of Monticello; two sisters, Guylene Easley of Des Arc and Alvern Cruce of Monticello; and six grandchildren.
Graveside service is 3 p.m. Friday at Oakland Cemetery with Rev. Jerry Ebert officiating.

Ollie Walker
MONTICELLO — Ollie Bell Artelia Walker, age 91, of Monticello, passed away Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008, at Drew Memorial Hospital.
She was born May 4, 1917, in Drew County, Ark.
She was the widow of James Wesley Walker, a member of Morning Star Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis Buchanor and Ella Mae Scott Buchanor; an infant daughter; a great-great-grandson, Areon T. Jacob; and a son-in-law, Willie E. Jacob.
Survivors include her son, James “Brother” Walker of Monticello; her daughter, Eloise Jacob of Monticello; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; and a host of cousins and friends.
Funeral services are 11 a.m. Friday at Morning Star Baptist Church with burial in Oakland Cemetery, Rev. D.J. Buffington officiating.

Laura White
MONTICELLO — Laura Lucille White, 84, of Monticello, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008, at her home.
She was born Dec. 29, 1923, in Drew County, the daughter of the late Grover Cleveland Berryman and Ethel Stephenson Berryman.
She was the widow of Woodrow Wilson Lollar and Virgil Levi White, a retired nurse and a member of Monticello Baptist Temple Church.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Cora Jane Lollar; two brothers, Grover Berryman and Robert Berryman; two sisters, Doris Hickam and Marguerite Cruce.
Survivors include one daughter, Frances Lollar Jordan and husband, Gary of Monticello; two brothers, Steve Berryman and wife, Geneva and Houston Berryman and wife, Camille, all of Monticello; two grandchildren, Andre Roberts and Keith Jordan; five great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Stephenson-Dearman Chapel. Burial in Green Hill Cemetery by Stephenson-Dearman.
Jeff Lovett
DETROIT — Jeff Conley Lovett, 79, of Detroit, formerly of Strong, Ark., died Saturday at Sinai Grace Hospital at Detroit.
Survivors include his wife, Annie Woods Lovett; four sons, Jeffery Lovett, Jerry Lovett, Darcy Lovett and Chester Lovett, all of Detroit; 23 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Curry Chapel AME Church at Strong with the Rev. A. Hamilton officiating. Burial will be in Piney Grove Cemetery by Reddick Funeral Home at Camden, Ark.
Floyd Yates
DUNCAN, N.C. — Floyd M. Yates, formerly of Pine Bluff, died at his home in Duncan, N.C., on Dec. 15, 2008.
He was born in Malvern, Ark., and is the son of the late Cecil and Zella (Walters) Yates.
He was a graduate of Malvern High School and Ouachita Baptist College. He had been a member of First Baptist Church in Pine Bluff and was currently a member of the congregation of Triangle Bible Church in Raleigh, N.C. He was a retired farmer.
He was a very loving brother, husband, and father.
He is survived by his wife Charlene; his son Brett; his brother Cecil, all of North Carolina; and his sister, Mary Mobley of Bryant, Ark.
The family requests that memorials be made to the National Arthritis Foundation and the American Cancer Society.
