UAPB’S BAND MOVES CLOSER TO FUND-RAISING GOAL

By Judy Normand/OF THE COMMERCIAL STAFF

Members of the Marching Musical Machine of the Mid-South are edging closer to their dream of performing during President-elect Barack Obama’s Inaugural Parade in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 20.

Darryl Evans, assistant director of bands at UAPB, works with the Marching Musical Machine of the Mid-South Tuesday evening as they rehearse for the upcoming Inaugural Parade in Washington D.C. Pine Bluff Commercial/Ralph Fitzgerald

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff’s band needs between $150,000 and $200,000 for the trip.

As of Tuesday afternoon, according to UAPB Chancellor Lawrence A. Davis Jr., the money is continuing to come in and, considering the band was notified of the opportunity to march in the parade just a week ago, the $125,000 raised so far is not bad — not enough, but not bad.

Davis said having UAPB’s band participate in the inaugural parade is “wonderful” and that the students did realize, at least to some extent, the significance of their participation in this event.

“I know they can’t have the same emotional feelings as me,” Davis said, “having lived through different times — I’ve watched this country come a long way and I know that sometimes it’s hard for young people today to grasp the significance of Obama’s election, but this trip does means a lot to them and they’re really excited to be able to be a part of this historic occasion.”

Asked what may happen if, at the 11th hour, there’s not enough money to make the trip, Davis said, “Oh, they’re going to Washington, even if I have to mortgage my house.”

John Graham, director of bands, said there will be two-a-day practices — 5:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., until it’s time to head out to Washington.

“We’re doing everything we can do to get ready for this,” Graham said, “and we want UAPB and Pine Bluff to know we’re working hard to represent them well.”

Those wishing to help secure M4’s place in the parade on Jan. 20 should make checks or money orders payable to the UAPB Foundation, indicating on the information line that the donation is for the UAPB Band.

Donations may be mailed to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, Office of University Relations & Development, 1200 N. University Drive, Slot 4981, Pine Bluff, Ark. 71601, or dropped off on campus at the foundation office or the band office.

To make a donation by credit card or for more information, contact the University Relations & Development department at (870) 575-8701.

The Commercial will run a list of donors in an edition of the paper following the inauguration. The list will be provided by UAPB.
