IRISH CULTURE, JUVENILE CURFEW, SYMPHONY GALA TOP WEEK

An Irish cultural program will be presented at a local school, the new juvenile curfew will be explained and the symphony will host a gala this week.

The Cultural Kaleidoscope today will present a program called Irish Kaleidoscope at LL. Owen Elementary School. Dearbhail Finnegan and Robin Slater from County Meath, Ireland, a husband and wife team with an extensive background in performing arts, will present a program on the music, history and heritage of Ireland.

The juvenile curfew policy adopted by the Pine Bluff City Council last week will be explained by police Lt. Bob Rawlinson during a radio program Tuesday between 9:30-10 a.m. on KTRN Radio. The program is called Harbor City Cop Talk and residents may call during the program or e-mail harborcitycoptalk@live.com.

The Pine Bluff Symphony Orchestra’s board of directors is celebrating Valentine’s Day during their “Champagne, Chocolate & Jazz Gala” Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m. in the atrium of the Donald W. Reynolds Community Services Center, 211 W. Third Ave. The event is the largest fundraiser of the year for the orchestra, now in its 22nd season.

Music will be provided by Ed Polcer & the Jazz All-Stars from New York. Champagne, wine, beer and hors d’oeuvres will be served. Reservations are required and may be obtained by calling 536-7666 by Wednesday.

  • The Pine Bluff Civil Service Commission will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the city council chambers of the Pine Bluff Civic Center.

  • U.S. Rep. Mike Ross will help present the Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Service to World War II Veteran and Pine Bluff resident Sgt. Joe A. Irvin, U.S. Army, today at 3 p.m. The event will be held in Ross’ office at the George Howard Jr. Federal Building, 100 E. Eighth Ave. , Room 2521.

  • The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Board of Visitors will meet at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in the Childress Hall Conference room.

  • “My Heart Is in the Garden” is the theme for the 21st annual Home and Garden Seminar & Show scheduled from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Pine Bluff Convention Center.

  • Dr. Jewel E. Hairston, associate administrator for Cooperative Extension Programs at Virginia State University in Petersburg, Va., will deliver the S.A. Haley lecture and Arkansas state Sen. Henry “Hank” Wilkins IV will be the luncheon speaker at the 53rd annual Rural Life Conference Friday at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. in the Isaac S. Hathaway-John M. Howard Fine Arts Center with the opening session at 8:45 a.m.

  • The Jefferson County Quorum Court meeting will be held in the 1890 Research Building at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff as a part of Black History month. The committee meetings are scheduled to begin at 5:15 p.m. today, and the regular monthly meeting at 5:30 p.m.

  • The Pine Bluff Branch of the NAACP will participate in the NAACP Legislative Day where the NAACP will celebrate its 100th anniversary. The event will be held at the state capitol at Little Rock from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

  • The Port Authority will meet at noon Wednesday at the Economic Development Alliance of Jefferson County.

  • The Watson Chapel School Board will meet at 7 tonight at the district office.

  • The White Hall School Board will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the district office.

  • The White Hall Planning Commission will meet at White Hall City Hall at 7 p.m. today.
