DEATHS FOR MONDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2009

Jerry Chastain

GLENDALE — Jerry Chastain, 66, of Glendale, Ark., died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009, at Drew Memorial Hospital in Monticello.

He was born May 31, 1942 in Batesville, son of Thomas Chastain and Frances Wolfe Chastain. Mr. Chastain was reared and received his early education in Linwood.

Mr. Chastain was a Baptist.

He owned and operated Pine Bluff Bolt and Nut for many years and also worked as a truck driver for KP Carriers in Kingsland.

Mr. Chastain was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Chastain; sister, Dolly Sue McGhee; two grandchildren, Mandi Law and Kourtnie Chastain; and great-grandchild, Jayden Davis.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Graves Chastain of Glendale; mother, Frances Wolfe Chastain of Ada, Okla.; three sons, Ronnie Chastain of Pine Bluff, Kevin Chastain and his wife, Sandra of Bryant and Keith Chastain and his wife, Amy of Glendale; five step-children, Susan Beard and her husband, Paul of Grapevine, JoAnna Hankins and her husband, Lyn of Glendale, Billy Joe Davis, Jr. of Pine Bluff, Tammie Healey and her husband, Anthony of Pine Bluff and Renaye Cortright and her husband, Leonard of Glendale; two sisters, Catherine Faultersack of Pine Bluff and Donna Robertson of Star City; three brothers, Emmett Chastain of Nevada, Earnest Chastain of Colorado and James Chastain of Missouri; 17 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009, in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son with Rev. Billy Burks and Rev. Larry Bishop, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Shady Grove Cemetery in Glendale. Visitation will be Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Robinson's.

Frances Avery

McGEHEE — Frances “Tiny” Santine Avery, age 78, of McGehee, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009.

She was born Sept. 20, 1930, at Tillar, a daughter of the late Serafine D. Santine and Cecilia Floriani Santine. She was a graduate of Tillar High School and the University of Arkansas. Prior to her marriage, she was a school teacher at Tillar. She was a Catholic, and spent the rest of her life as a homemaker, wife, and mother.

Survivors include her husband, Mark Mason Avery, whom she married on June 7, 1957, at McGehee; a son, Mike Avery of Pine Bluff; three sisters, Lillian Cox of Tillar, Rosalie Gould of McGehee, and Elizabeth Morton of White Hall.

No services will be held. Arrangements were by Fuller Hale-South Funeral Services, Pine Bluff.

Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.

Julia Burks

MONTICELLO — Julia Pauline Burks, 84, of Monticello passed away Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009, at her home. She was born Aug. 11, 1924, in McGehee, Ark.

She was a homemaker, a Catholic and the daughter of the late Robert Porter and Lola Lofton Porter.

Survivors include her husband, Clifford M. Burks Sr., of Monticello; two sons, Clifford M. Burks Jr., of Marble Falls, Texas and Carl Porter Burks and wife Debbie of Little Rock; two daughters, Julie E. Foster and Paulette Burks, both of Monticello; one sister, Lou Scott of McGehee; six grandchildren, Archie Neilson, Carl Gabriel Burks, Juddy Burks, Cody Foster, Jay Foster and Elizabeth Burchfield; six great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Union Ridge Cemetery.

Douglas Taylor

MONTICELLO — Douglas Ray Taylor, age 72, of Monticello passed away Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009, at the Drew Memorial Hospital in Monticello, Ark.

Born May 11, 1936, in Swartz, La., He was the son of the late June Taylor and Azlee Gary Taylor. He was the retired owner of Monticello Packing Co., a Baptist, and a Mason.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Gloria Ann Norris Taylor of Monticello; two sons, James Ray Taylor and wife Annette of Henderson, Nev., and David Dewayne Taylor and wife Jayne of Monticello; two daughters, Tamara Taylor Lewis and husband Zahn of Fayetteville and Terrie Lee Taylor Wyles and husband Mike of Paducah, Ky.; one sister, Irene Taylor Richardson of West Monroe, La.; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and one step great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Monday at the Stephenson-Dearman Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Buddy Lemons. Memorials may be made to the Arkansas Children’s Hospital or the American Cancer Society.

Phillip Kraft

SHERIDAN — Mr. Phillip Francis Kraft, 69, of Sheridan, Ark., departed this life Feb. 6, 2009, Little Rock, Ark.

He was born Oct. 28, 1939, to Perry H. and Helen Marie Brannon Kraft in Little Rock, Ark.

After 30 years he retired from Black and White Cab Co., and was a veteran of the Army.

Phillip was a member of Parkview Christian Church in Little Rock and his favorite pastime was fishing.

He is survived by one son, Phillip F. Kraft II; and a daughter, Carol Ann Kraft; also three brothers, Kenneth Kraft, Little Rock, Ark., Richard Kraft, Benton, Ark., and David Kraft, Mabelvale, Ark.

Graveside services Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009, 11 a.m., Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery, Rev. Stan McDougal to officiate.

Memorials to the American Cancer Society.

Callie Dewberry

GARY, Ind.— Callie Virginia Stallon McCraney Dewberry was born Aug. 9, 1912, and departed life on Feb. 4 at the age of 96. She accepted Jesus Christ of Nazareth at an early age in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Preceding her in death was her brother, Joe Stallon; mother, Mary Effie Wade; brother, Bobby Lee Stallon; sister Viola Burks; husband, Rev. Zebedee Dewberry; and daughter, Elvira Williams.

She leaves to cherish her memories her daughter, Rev. Earnestine Johnson; sons, Rev. Reverend McCraney, Willie McCraney and Michael Dewberry. She also has a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and great-great-great- grandchildren.

The visitation will be held Tuesday, Feb. 10 from 9-11 a.m. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m., at Smith, Bizzell and Warner Funeral Home, 4209 Grant St., Gary, Ind., with the Rev. Reverend McCraney officiating. Internment at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

Betty Satterwhite

HOUSTON, Texas — Bettie Ware Satterwhite, 85, died Friday, in Houston. She was a 1942 graduate of Pine Bluff High School in Pine Bluff, Ark.

Mrs. Satterwhite was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Ware;and a sister Patricia Payne.

She is survived by a sister and her husband Mr. & Mrs. Carl D. Purnell of Pine Bluff.

Graveside services and interment will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston by Geo. H. Lewis & Sons of Houston.
