DEATHS FOR WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2009

Frances McMillan

Frances Taylor McMillan, age 90, of Pine Bluff, died Monday, Feb. 9, 2009.

She was born Jan. 22, 1919, in Jefferson County, a daughter of the late John Bart Taylor and Clementine “Tinnie” Rodgers Taylor.

She was a homemaker and a member of Harmony Missionary Baptist Church.

Mrs. McMillan was predeceased by her husband, Calvin McMillan, whom she married on Oct. 17, 1936; three brothers, Clyde, Oscar, and Guy Taylor; three sisters, Lela Price, Vera Anderson, and Mable McCoskey; and a stepsister, Carrie Perry.

Survivors include her son, Carroll Lee McMillan (Betty) of Little Rock; four grandchildren, Renee Harper (Bobby) of Glendale, Kay Barber (Ronnie) of Pine Bluff, B.J. Hamlin (Peggy), and Fred McMillan (Marlo) all of Bryant; six great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Thursday, 3 p.m. at Harmony Missionary Baptist Church with Brother Nathan Petty officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery by Fuller Hale-South Funeral Services.

Visitation will be today from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Preston Griffin

BENTON — Mr. Preston Tyler Griffin, 10 and a half years old passed away Monday, Feb. 9, 2009, in Little Rock, Ark., at Children’s Hospital.

He was preceded in death by his great grandparents, John V. “Pete” Smith in 1997 and Nina Evelyn Owens Smith in 2008; great great-grandparents, Oscar Leonard Owens in 1993 and Viola Evelyn Harrison Owens in 2008; great-grandparents, Hubert and Ela Mae Gates of Pine Bluff; great-great-grandparents, Albert and Bessie Griffin of Pine Bluff.

Preston was a member of the Salem 4-H Club and a member of 1st Assembly in Benton. He competed in the Special Olympics in 2007 and 2006, and won first place and regional and state in basketball and bowling. He was a participant of Kidsource and Saline Pediatrics Therapies of Benton. He attended Brittin Elementary in Georgia, Taylor Elementary in Pine Bluff, Gandy Elementary in Pine Bluff, Harmony Grove in Benton and Salem Elementary in Bryant.

He is survived by his mother, Farrah Renee Turner of Benton; father, Charles Griffin Jr. of Pine Bluff; stepfather, Edward Turner II of Benton; grandparents, Linda Kaye Buie of Benton; Charles and Brenda Sue Griffin of Pine Bluff; step grandparents, Edward Sr. and Debbie Turner of Benton; aunt, Crystal Andrews of Benton; cousin, Clayton Andrews of Benton; uncle, Randy Sarver of Ferndale; uncle, Sgt. Mark Griffin, currently serving his third tour in Iraq and wife Christie Griffin of Killeen, Texas; cousins, Brittany and Garrett of Killeen, Texas.

Memorial services will be Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009, at 10 a.m. at First Assembly of God in Benton with burial in Barnishaw Cemetery in Pine Tree at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Visitation will be today, Feb. 11, 2009, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Kernodle Funeral Home in Wynne, Ark.

Rebecca Smith

MONTICELLO — Rebecca ‘Ma Bec’ McQuaigue Smith, age 60, of Monticello, died Monday, Feb. 9, 2009.

She was born July 22, 1948, in Columbia County, a daughter of the late Calvin and Margaret Bradshaw McQuaigue.

Becky was a homemaker and the owner operator of Al and Becky’s Bunny Farm.

She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church.

Mrs. Smith was predeceased by her husband, Al Smith, whom she married on Oct. 29, 1964, at Magnolia; an infant brother, Teddy Wayne; a sister, Angie Verne McQuaigue; and a nephew, Scott Johnson.

Survivors include three daughters, Montie Shults (David) of Sulphur Springs, Martie Taylor (Joe) of Monticello, and Shawn Harris of Woodlawn; three sisters, Rexene Hicks of Little Rock, Francis Johnson and Nannie Jo McQuaige, both of Magnolia; seven grandchildren, Candice Barnard, Bradley and Nick Smith, Derrick Shults, Allison, Ricky and Spencer Harris; two great-grandchildren, Taylor and Callie Jo Barnard; and many other loving friends and family.

Graveside services will be Thursday, 1 p.m. in Graceland Cemetery by Fuller Hale-South Funeral Services with Brother Tim Foreman officiating.

Visitation will be today from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Wayne Childers

SHERIDAN — Wayne Everett “Bud” Childers of Sheridan, Ark., was born March 28, 1932, at Sheridan, the son of the late Thurman Shaw and Myrtice Vanlandingham Childers.

He was a graduate of Sheridan schools where he was named to all-state football in 1950; graduate of Henderson State Teachers College, now Henderson State University in 1954 with a BME in instrumental music; received his master’s of music education from North Texas State, now North Texas University in 1960.

Bud was a director of bands for 40 years. He began his teaching career at Dumas, Ark., teaching high school band and throughout his teaching career, he also taught band at Greenville, Miss., Pine Bluff High School and White Hall High School before retiring in 1994. After retirement, Bud was asked to direct the Pine Bluff Community Band.

He was a charter member of First Landmark Baptist Church in Sheridan and later became a member of First Baptist Church of Pine Bluff.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sister, Frances Jo Bratton.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Bobbie Baynham Childers of Sheridan. They were married June 6, 1954. Other survivors are his son, Wayne E. Childers Jr. and wife Joanne of New Hope, Pa.; daughter, Melody Childers Rainwater and husband, John of Sheridan; three grandchildren, Faith Childers, Alina Childers and David Rainwater; two step-grandchildren, Shawn Simmonds and Lianna Simmonds.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009, at Memorial Gardens Funeral Home Chapel in Sheridan with Bro. Shawn Hill and Bro. Harold Mitchell officiating. A private family interment will be held prior to the memorial service at Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Sheridan with Bro. William Ashcraft and Bro. Joe Paul Bratton officiating.

Visitation will be Wednesday evening, 5-8 p.m.

Ethel Hadden

TRINITY, N.C. — Mrs. Ethel Edna Martindale Hadden, 85, resident of 6002 Deaton Road, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009, at High Point Regional Hospital.

A native of Ogema, Ark., she was born on July 12, 1923, a daughter to Charles and Nettie Davis Martindale. She was registered nurse, a friend of Bill W., and preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Franklin Hadden.

She is survived by her children, Charles Hadden of Little Rock, Ark., Perry Hadden of Pine Bluff, Ark., Carol Johnson and husband, James of Trinity, Joy Rose and husband Greg of Greensboro; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A visitation to celebrate Ethel’s life will be 5 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009, at her residence. A memorial service will be conducted at a later date in Arkansas.

Morris Lever

LOS ANGELES — Morris Lever, 70, of Los Angeles died Thursday at his home.

He was born Jan. 4, 1939, at Pine Bluff, a son of the Rev. Selma Moore of Pine Bluff and the late Julius Lever Sr.

Survivors: wife, Louise Lever; son, Morris Lever Jr. of Los Angeles; daughters, Yvette Lever White, Shantel Lever and Marie Lever, all of Los Angeles; brother, Julius Lever Jr. of Pine Bluff; and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services: 9 a.m. Friday at Englewood Mortuary at Englewood, Calif. Burial will be in Englewood Cemetery.

Octavia Morrison of Pine Bluff died Tuesday at her home. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Henson Mortuary.

Dorothy Turner, 74, of Pine Bluff died Tuesday at Jefferson Regional Medical Center. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Brown Funeral Home of Pine Bluff.

SHERIDAN — Doyle Waller, 66, of the Ico community near Sheridan died Monday. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Fuller Hale-South Funeral Services at Pine Bluff.

LOS ANGELES — Lethaiel James, 72, of Los Angeles, formerly of Pine Bluff, died Feb. 2 at Metropolitan Hospital at Los Angeles. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Perry Funeral Home at Pine Bluff.
