The 40 or 50 boys in Jefferson county who will compete for honors in the 1929 cotton growing contests will have some real competition, it developed Saturday.
At least three young ladies have staked off an acre of ground and have announced that they expect to lead all in cotton production.
Misses Effie and Estelle Wooley of Watson Chapel, each have been assigned a one-acre tract by W.A. Nivens on his farm there. Miss Grace Brookshire will cultivate an acre given to her by E.W. Phillips on his Tamo pike farm.

LOS ANGELES — “I have never smoked a marijuana cigarette in all my 26 years,” said dancer Vicki Evans, friend of Robert Mitchum, and the jury believed her.
The shapely 26-year-old blonde was acquitted yesterday of a charge of conspiracy to possess marijuana the summer night she was arrested with Mitchum and two others in a narcotics raid.
