STUDENTS RECEIVE AWARDS AT LANGUAGE FESTIVAL

Dermott High School students in Victoria Angulo’s Spanish classes attended the Arkansas Foreign Language Teachers Association 2009 State Foreign Language Festival recently at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway receiving multiple awards including the Festival Award.

Dermott High School junior Jared Hawkins won third place in the Vocabulary Bee-Level III category. Hawkins also won a second place and a trophy in Reading-Level III category.

Junior Jarel Hawkins won fourth place in the Vocabulary Bee-Level II category. Junior Diedra Hawkins won fifth place in the Vocabulary Bee-Level II category.

Students obtaining a certificate of “Distinguished” rating in talent include: senior Rachel Hartfield; juniors Laquan Jones, Laquan Giles, and Artez Johnson; sophomores Tori Johnson, Teisha Holliman, Zarondrick Manning, Mariah Esters, and Tiffany Johnson; and freshman Sam Manning.

Senior Michael Bunn and sophomore Johnathan Proffitt both earned a certificate of “Distinguished” rating in reading category.

Sophomore Shante Ford received a certificate of “Proficient” in poetry category.

Sophomore Cynetta Odem earned a certificate of “Honorable Mention” in the Vocabulary Bee category.

All the students attending the festival, as well as senior Doven Glover, sophomore Brandon Moore, and freshmen Courtney Dantzler and Laporsha White participated in the event “Caught You Talking.” In this activity, the students earned a point for every conversation they initiated in the target language. Dermott High School obtained the Festival Award for earning the most points.
