DEATHS FOR SATURDAY, APRIL 4, 2009

Syble Akines

Syble Akines, 83 of Pine Bluff, died Wednesday.

Survivors include sons, Danny Akines and Glen Akines, both of Pine Bluff, and Arlin Akines of Star City; daughter, Judy Brown of Pine Bluff; brother, Joe Reeves of McGehee; sisters, Jean Williams of Grapevine and Hazel Williams of Clarksville; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Buie Funeral Home at Rison. Burial will be in New Hope Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mae Lue Holmes

Mrs. Mae Lue Holmes was born Feb. 1, 1916, in Grady, Ark.

She was the fourth child of the late Mrs. Adora Goree Scarver and Mr. Willie Scarver. Mrs. Mae Lou Holmes had six siblings who preceded her in death, three sisters, Mamie Scarver Neal, Earnestine Scarver Dickens, Katie Scarver Robinson; three brothers, Henry Scarver Sr., Mr. Herman Scarver, Fluker Scarver.

The sunset of her life was Monday, March 30, 2009, time: 3:12 a.m.

She received her education in the Lincoln County School system, Grady, Ark. Mrs. Mae Lue Holmes confessed a hope in Christ at early age and united with Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Grady, Ark., where she remained an active member until moving to Pine Bluff, Ark., in 1969. She joined Indiana Street Baptist Church in 1969 under the leadership of the late Rev. S.B. Scott, where she remained under the leadership of Minister L.K. Solomon until he retired. She was a faithful member of the choir and Sunday school until her health prevented her from being active. She was united in holy matrimony to Mr. Levi Holmes Sr., March 12, 1936, who preceded her in death on Dec. 16, 1996. To this union 12 children were born.

She leaves to cherish her memory 10 loyal, loving children: three daughters, Mrs. Clemetine Holmes (Arthur) Porter of St. Louis, Mo., Mrs. Osceola Holmes Lewis of Little Rock, Ark., and Miss Perlina L. Holmes of Little Rock, Ark.; seven sons, Lee Wesley (Edith) Holmes, Marthasville, Mo., Mr. Frederick (Helen) Holmes of Ferguson, Mo., Mr. Kenneth (Joyce) Holmes of St. Charles, Mo., Mr. Samuel (Martha) Holmes of Pine Bluff, Ark., Mr. Saquret (Georgia) Holmes of Pine Bluff, Ark., Mr. Ferdinand (Thurlene) Holmes of George Town, Tenn., and Mr. Levi Holmes Jr., Pine Bluff, Ark.; 27 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren; host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be Monday, April 6, 2009, at the Indiana Street Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Key officiating. Interment will be at the Graceland Cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday from 5 until 7 p.m. at the P.K. Miller Mortuary.

Mrs. Holmes will lie in repose at the church Monday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Nelda Brewer

FORDYCE — Nelda Lee Brewer, 65, of Fordyce died Thursday at Dallas County Medical Center.

She was born Aug. 9, 1943, at Grapevine, a daughter of the late Harold and Marie DeMoss.

Survivors include her husband, Lloyd E. “Buddy” Brewer; one daughter, April Doggett of Warren; one sister, Linda Gavin of Herbine; and one grandchild.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Benton Funeral Home at Fordyce with the Revs. Bobby George and Jimmy Owen officiating. Burial will be in Davis Cemetery at Grapevine.

Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Ruthelle Gage

MABELVALE — Ruthelle Jones Gage, 83, of Mabelvale died Thursday.

Survivors: husband, James L. Gage; sons, Eddie Vanlandingham of Sheridan and Terry Vanlandingham of Mabelvale; daughters, Becky Mae Johnston of Little Rock and Donna Lee of Arkadelphia; brother, David Jewel Jones of Bryant; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in Lost Creek Cemetery at Sheridan. Arrangements are by Memorial Gardens Funeral Home of Sheridan.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until time of service at the funeral home.

Herman Hutto

RUSSELLVILLE — Herman Hutto, 93, of Russellville, Ark., died Thursday, April 2, 2009, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Russellville.

He was born Jan. 25, 1916, in Grapevine, to Will O. and Georgia E. Fikes Hutto.

Mr. Hutto was reared and educated in Pine Bluff, graduating from Pine Bluff High School in 1934.

He served in the United States Navy during World War II.

He worked 38 years for the Cotton Belt Railroad, before retiring in 1979 as an engineer.

He was a member of Russellville First Assembly, Pioneer Coffee Club and a lifetime member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.

Mr. Hutto was a 32 degree mason and achieved the rank of KCCH. He was a member of the Jacob Brump Lodge F&AM No. 160, past High Priest of the York Rite bodies in Pine Bluff, where he had served as head of Sword and Trowel, Order of Eastern Star, chapter No. 40 in Pine Bluff, where he served as past Patron and Arkansas Valley, chapter No. 606 in Russellville, Sahara Shrine Temple and the White Hall American Legion Post No. 0232.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of 57 years, Mary B. Jackson Hutto.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma Kinslow Hutto; a stepson, Floyd (Patsy) Kinslow of Atkins; a stepdaughter, Geanie Zwiebel of Las Vegas, Nev.; several grandchildren and several, nieces and nephews.

Graveside services by Ralph Robinson & Son of Pine Bluff, will be 3 p.m., today, April 4, 2009, in Graceland Cemetery in Pine Bluff with Rev. Charles Perry and Rev. Ronnie Morris officiating.

Janice Ferguson, 57, of Pine Bluff died Friday. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Brown Funeral Home of Pine Bluff.

Margaret West Moran, 86, of Pine Bluff died Friday. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Fuller Hale-South Funeral Services.

MITCHELLVILLE — Roscoe Joiner, 88, of Mitchellville, died Thursday at Jefferson Regional Medical Center at Pine Bluff. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Serenity Gardens Funeral Services at Dumas.
