JRMC COMMUNITY GRANTS ANNOUNCED

Thursday, May 7, 2009 10:33 PM CDT

SPECIAL TO THE COMMERCIAL

The Pine Bluff Area Community Foundation announced the first round of grant awards made from the gifts presented by Jefferson Regional Medical Center.

These awards are from two different funds, said foundation executive director Christopher Castoro.

“One, the healthy lifestyles fund, started with $200,000 and all of this money will be distributed over a three year period,” he said.

Castoro said this fund was created primarily to encourage businesses to start and sustain programs promoting healthy employee life styles, although non-profits are still encouraged to apply.

No applications

“Not a single business applied for it,” he said. “Business people shouldn’t leave money on the table.”

But not to worry, Castoro said, healthy lifestyle applications will be reviewed quarterly, with the next deadline as June 30.

“The other source of grant money from JRMC, called the community health grant, will be available again after July 1 of this year, as part of our summer grant cycle. We expect to offer the community health grants on a twice per year basis,” he said.

The JRMC healthy lifestyles grants, totaling $21,535 this quarter, were awarded to:

  • Arkansas River Education Service Cooperative in Pine Bluff for their “Health and Wellness the ARESC Way.”

  • Dallas County Alliance Supporting Health in Fordyce for “DASH for Fitness.”

  • Turning Point Ministries in Stuttgart for their “Families for Health” program.

The JRMC community health grants, amounting to $25,000 in total were awarded to:

  • Arkansas River Education Service Cooperative in Pine Bluff for staff health screenings

  • Southeast Arkansas Medical Network Inc., in Pine Bluff to support the Southeast Arkansas Diabetes Education Program.

  • Harbor City Book Club in Pine Bluff for a program titled “Food for Thought: Reclaiming the Roots of Soul.”

  • Women of Vision Health Ministry at First Missionary Baptist Church in Pine Bluff for a health outreach program.

  • Jefferson Comprehensive Care in Pine Bluff for health promotions and disease prevention.
