The Dollarway School Board agreed Monday during a called meeting to interview six of 21 applicants Wednesday and Thursday evening in the search for a superintendent to replace Thomas Gathen, who has resigned to accept the post of superintendent of the McGehee School District.

Gene Stewart, president of the board, said he was “pleasantly surprised by the number of applicants … and their excellent experience.”

Board members met in executive session for two hours and 20 minutes Monday to review the applications, then announced in open session that the six would be invited to interviews later this week. The board’s regular monthly meeting is scheduled for 7 this evening.

Stewart said he would extend the board’s invitation for interviews to:

  • Dr. Bettye Dunn Wright, an assistant professor in the Department of Education at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.

  • Darrell Porter of Camden, former Smackover superintendent.

  • Linda English of Marianna, former interim superintendent at Brinkley and currently a curriculum specialist with the Helena-West Helena School District.

  • James Sharpe, outgoing superintendent of the Pulaski County Special School District.

  • Ronald Laurent, principal at Pine Bluff Jack Robey Junior High School.

  • Dr. Arthur Tucker, assistant superintendent of the Texarkana School District.

Wright and Laurent applied earlier for the position of superintendent of the Pine Bluff School District. Frank Anthony earlier this year served notice that he is retiring at the end of the current school year.

Alfred D. Carroll, principal at Pine Bluff’s Southwood Elementary School, and Pearly Stepps, former assistant superintendent at Dollarway, were among the 21 applicants.
