ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL, Ill. — “Rewarding, experience, challenging, laid back.” Juhwon Peoples wasn't describing a hobby or college class but his internship experience.
The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff student completed studies in computer networking to earn a bachelor’s degree and is pursing a second bachelor’s degree in regulatory science.
His versatility gave Peoples an advantage as a Minority College Relations Program intern. He completed a 15-week internship at Crane Army Ammunition Activity in Crane, Ind.
The Minority College Relations Program seeks to place hard working students in internship positions.
A collaborative effort between the Joint Munitions Command and Army Sustainment Command, both headquartered at Rock Island Arsenal in Rock Island, Ill., it serves students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic serving intuitions, tribal colleges and other minority serving institutions by offering internship opportunities within the federal government.
Peoples learned from the internship daily and has advice for others looking to prepare themselves for the “real world.”
“Explore other options and apply to (this internship) to see what it's like first-hand. To me it's been rewarding. I've enjoyed the experience and want to come back.”
He was offered opportunities to exercise his talents in two areas.
“First, I was in the information technology department. I asked to be moved to the safety department. Since I've been in the safety department, I've been working on respiratory programs — coming from the Navy side over to this side. I also did inspection on some of the (ammunition) magazines,” he said.
