SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES AVALABLE FOR LOCAL YOUTH

Art and Science Center for Southeast Arkansas

Elise Askew, the director of education for the Art and Science Center for Southeast Arkansas, said the programs offered by the center are good fun and good learning, especially the July camp focused on illusion and perspective.

“It’s all hands-on,” Askew said. “It’s not the regular museum experience.”

This playful learning includes optical illusions, flip books and camouflage.

“They can find it in every day nature,” Askew said.

She added that the center is planning more events for the summer months and will be advertised closer to the dates.

Theater Camp

Time: 1-5 p.m., Monday-Friday, June 1-12

Cost: $120/members, $150/non-members

Ages: 8-18

Spend an exciting two weeks with professional actors from the Arkansas Arts Center. Participate in stage movement exercises and confidence-building activities. Students will increase their knowledge of stage direction, improvisation, script reading and writing. This is a great class for aspiring performers as well as the student that just wants to boost his or her ability to speak in front of a group.

ARTshop: Mixed Media Collage

Time: 1-4 p.m., Monday-Friday, June 22-26

Cost: $120/members, $150/non-members

Ages: 8-18

Mixed media refers to a work of visual art that combines various traditionally distinct visual art media (acrylic paint, paper, pastel, found objects, etc.). Students will spend a week learning how to mix and match masterpieces.

Smart Art

Time: 1-4 p.m., Wednesday-Friday, July 8-10

Cost: $48/members, $60/non-members

Ages: 3-5th grades

Delve into the 21st Century with a class using Pico Crickets to make art. Pico Crickets are tiny computers you can use to create musical sculptures, interactive jewelry, dancing creatures and other playful inventions. Come combine art and science and learn about the world where technology meets art.

Summer Scholars: Mad Labs!

Time: 1-4 p.m. Monday-Friday, June 15-19

Cost: $120/members, $150/non-members

Ages: Kindergarten-6th grades

Calling all budding scientists: Sign up for a week of mixing, fizzing and foaming fun. Students will layer liquids, create ice cream crystals and color code candy. The fun doesn't stop there. Participants will enjoy a week of tantalizing, eye-popping experiments that will have their heads spinning.

Summer Scholars: Illusion Confusion

Time: 1-4 p.m., Monday-Friday, July 27-31

Cost: $120/members, $150/non-members

Ages: Kindergarten-6th grades

Seeing is not always believing. In this week-long camp students will experience the fascinating world of science as illusion through the Center's hands-on kids exhibit, Illusion Confusion, made possible by the Arkansas Discovery Network, funded by the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation. Students will build and manipulate early film animation zoetropes, create flip books and uncover the art of camouflage. Minds will bend as participants experiment with optical illusions. Come learn how to be a discerning and curious scientist.

Adult Cooking Classes

Time: 6-8 p.m., Mondays, July 6, 13, 20, 27

Cost per Class: $20/members, $25/non-members

Cost per Series: $75/members, $90/non-members

Ages: Adult

Learn to cook like a pro or at least how to eat like one. Enjoy watching Southeast Arkansas' best chefs share their culinary secrets in a series of cooking classes set for every Monday in July. Learn how to whip up French, German, Cuban or Asian with style. Or just sit back and enjoy watching and eating the dining creations. Classes will take place in the kitchens of Trinity Episcopal Church.

Young at Art

Time: 10-10:45 a.m., every Tuesday year-round

Cost: Free

Ages: 2-4, Children must be accompanied by an adult

Young at Art is a toddler art class that strengthens the bond of parent and child through the use of arts and crafts. Reservations are required for groups of 10 or more. For more information contact the Center Education Department at 870.536.3375.

Workshop Wednesdays

Time: Wednesday mornings for groups of at least 10

Cost: $4 per person

A summer-long program for organizations, daycare centers, vacation Bible schools and day camps — any group is welcome. Reservations are required. Participants tour the center and then participate in an arts and science workshop led by qualified staff.

Caleb Initiative Inc. presents Annual Boot Camp/Youth Explosion

Boot-Camp: June 1-26

Youth Explosion: July 6-10

Cost: $30 for Boot Camp, $25 for Youth Explosion

Ages: 12-18

Activities will include power-packed teaching, 3-on-3 basketball, volleyball and Playstation tournaments, free food and fun, talent showcase, games and intense role plays. The camp and youth explosion will be held at the Greater Fellowship Ministries at 2401 S. Main St., Pine Bluff. For more information, call (870)543-2977 ext. 106.

Gov. Mike Huckabee Delta Rivers Nature Center

Rusty Scarborough, the education program coordinator at the Gov. Mike Huckabee Delta Rivers Nature Center, said there are lots of interesting free things to see and do during the summer at the center.

There’s fish and alligator feedings on Saturdays from Memorial Day to Labor Day, he said, as well as a Quilter’s Day.

“Last year we hung over 100 quilts in the nature center,” he said.

The Summer Adventure Series which gives children a chance to practice their skills in shooting, archery, canoeing and fishing, are nearly all filled, Scarborough said.

“This year we had more spaces than ever,” he said.

But they also filled up very quickly, he added.

Starting in August and then continuing one weekend in September and October, the center also is offering hunter education classes, he said.

Alligator Feeding

Time: Saturdays after fish feeding (around 3:20 p.m.)

Cost: Free

Ages: All

Alligator feeding occurs between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Fish feeding occurs year-round Tuesday-Friday at 11 a.m. and Saturday-Sunday at 3 p.m.

4th Annual Nature Quilters Quilt Show

Time: 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Aug. 15

Cost: Free

Ages: All

The fourth annual Nature Quilters Quilt Show will feature quilts done by local quilters. Vendors and local quilt guilds will be stationed throughout the nature center. There will be free quilting classes as well as demonstrations for hand quilting and long-arm quilting offered throughout the day as well as drawings for door prizes. So come on out and enter your quilt into the show and vote for your favorite quilt, and then enjoy the rest of the nature center.

Plant Swap

Time: 10 a.m., June 6, July 18, Aug. 29

Cost: Free

Ages: All

Bring a plant, cuttings, seeds or bulbs to trade with other plant lovers. (Please label your plants or seeds.) You will learn about Arkansas’ native plants. You never know what you might go home with. The Plant Swap is held in the Staging Building in front of the center. Bring a fellow plant lover or your family, enjoy the swap and then visit the center.

5th Annual Gardening in the Bayou Plant Show, Contest and Sale

Time: 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., June 27

Cost: Free

Ages: All

This event offers you the opportunity to exhibit a bit of everything from your perfect plant to your cute but ugly plant. Amateur or professional, first grader or senior citizen, participation is open to everyone. It’s a great way to show off your skills, meet new people, and win a blue ribbon and other prizes. Participate in one or more of the categories from native plants to exotics.

Clubs, organizations and vendors will be located throughout the nature center. They will be selling plants and gardening products throughout the day. This is a great family event, so come on out and see what plant enthusiasts have grown and then enjoy what the nature center has to offer.

City of Pine Bluff 2009 Summer Youth Program

Time: 4 weeks, hours differ

Cost: Free

Ages: 16-21

The city is offering opportunities for about 100 young residents to discover more about a career field they’re interested in, said Tennille Walker, with the city’s human resources department.

“The participants will get an opportunity to experience different fields,” she said.

The city will place successful candidates in intern positions at City Hall, as well as offices for doctors, lawyers and other professionals in town, Walker said.

“Our goal with the summer program is to train young folks,” she said. “We want them to stay in the city.”

The experience also will look good on a r/sum/, Walker added.

Interested individuals can get an application online at www.cityofpinebluff.com or by stopping by the city’s Department of Human Resources at 200 E. 8th Ave., Room 104, Pine Bluff.

The deadline for receiving applications is May 29 at 5 p.m. Walker said every individual who submits a completed application will be granted an interview.
