BODY REPORTEDLY SEEN IN ARKANSAS RIVER

BY THE COMMERCIAL STAFF
Saturday, July 18, 2009 11:00 PM CDT

Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies were reportedly searching for a body that was seen in the main channel of the Arkansas River near the Island Harbor area Saturday night, but at press time had not been successful.

Major Greg Bolin said the department had put two boats in the water at approximately 7 p.m. after witnesses saw what appeared to be a body, now believed to have drowned in the river after diving off a party barge Saturday night.

At about 9 p.m., reports were that the search had been called off for the night and would continue again today at 7 a.m. with a third boat using newly acquired sonar equipment; because of recent construction, the search had been made more difficult.

The name of the apparent victim had not been released pending further investigation.
