ROSIE VARNELL

Rosie A. Varnell, 91, of Pine Bluff, died peacefully Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009, at her home, with her children by her side.

Mrs. Varnell was born Dec. 6, 1917, in Cleveland County, Ark., to the late Zack T. and Anna Hopson Kimbrell. She was reared and received her education in Cleveland County, where she attended Cleveland County Schools. Mrs. Varnell moved to Pine Bluff in 1940.

She married Gillie B. Varnell on Nov. 13, 1937, in Rison, Ark.

Mrs. Varnell was a homemaker and a member of Matthews Memorial Baptist Church.

She is survived by two sons, John W. “Buddy” (Carol) Varnell and Billy Joe (Mary Kay) Varnell, both of Pine Bluff; five daughters, Eva M. (Don) Hankins of Coldwater, Miss., Linda F. (Jim) Overton of San Antonio, Texas, Betty R. (James) Wreyford, Barbara J. Varnell, and JoAnn (Bruce) Taylor, all of Pine Bluff; 15 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Z.T. Kimbrell of Glendale, Elmer Kimbrell and Leland Kimbrell, both of Fort Worth, Texas; a sister, Ervie Clark of Pine Bluff.

Mrs. Varnell was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Gillie B. Varnell, who passed away on June 15, 2000; a brother, Ivan Kimbrell; and three sisters, Gertrude Stringfellow, Minnie Chandler, and Marie Threlkeld.

The family will receive friends Sunday, 2 to 4 p.m. at Robinson’s.

Funeral services will be Monday, Aug. 31, 2009, 10 a.m., in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son with Revs. Steve Monk and Bobby Hartsfield officiating. Interment will follow at Moore’s Church Cemetery in Cleveland County.

The family wants to give a special “Thank You” to her caregivers and Hospice Angels for their kindness and devotion.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials take the form of contributions to Alzheimer’s Association Central AR Regional Center, 411 S. Victory, Suite 202, Little Rock, Ark., 72201.
