SPECIAL TO THE COMMERCIAL
The Aquaculture/Fisheries Center of Excellence at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff will offer a fun learning opportunity for high school students this fall. Aquatic Sciences Day will be held 9:30 a.m. to noon Sept. 24 at the university’s Aquaculture Research Station.
Demonstration events include fish anatomy, pond sampling techniques, fish aging, fish buoyancy and locomotion and more. Among the new presentations is Fish vs. Phelps: What Fish Need for Speed which focuses on how form and function combine to increase speeds in fish.
Also new this year is Alligator Gar: Beast or Beauty which is about one of the state’s biggest sport fish that also happens to be a predator with needle-sharp teeth.
Back this year is the popular Fish as Art activity where students use rubber fish and acrylic paint to create textured prints. The activity helps highlight the fact that some fish have tattoos and are injected with fluorescent crystals.
Aquatic Sciences Day is a fun day of learning about biology, chemistry, engineering, math, nutrition and careers in aquaculture.
Educators who want information or want to sign up their classes can contact Cassandra Hawkins-Byrd at 870-575-8123 or cbyrd@uaex.edu.
