LITTLE ROCK — Today, Gov. Mike Beebe will proclaim Sept. 21-25 as Adult Education Week in Arkansas and Wednesday as General Educational Development (GED¨) Pride Day.

“It is timely and appropriate that attention be focused on the special efforts and dedication of Arkansas’ adult educators who prepare individuals for productive employment and enriched lives,” the proclamation reads. “I encourage my fellow citizens to become familiar with the services and benefits offered by adult education courses and to support and participate in these programs.”

The purpose of adult education is to assist adults to become literate, obtain knowledge and skills for employment and self-sufficiency, obtain the educational skills necessary to become full partners in their children’s educational development, and complete their secondary school education.

Local agencies offer free adult education classes:

Day and evening GED classes are offered and are free. Computer Literacy for the adult learner, Conversational ESL, and other basic work skills training are also available through the program. Details: 575-8206 or 575-8202.

  • Adult Education Center — The Adult Education Center of Jefferson County also accepts adult students interested in earning their GEDs and also offers free classes. The director is Jesse Rawls and the center is located at 414 S. Walnut St. Details: Call 534-5823.
