The Arkansas-Pine Bluff soccer team will begin the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament exactly where it did a year ago. After a 1-0 loss to Grambling State on Sunday, the Lady Lions will begin the tournament as the No. 2 seed from the Western Division.
The tournament begins Thursday in Itta Bena, Miss. UAPB (9-6-4) will open against Alabama A&M (2-14), the No. 3 seed from the East, at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday.
A win would set up a semifinal game on Friday against either Jackson State, which UAPB tied 1-1 earlier this season, or Southern, which UAPB beat 4-0 earlier this season.
The tournament final is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday.
Had the Lady Lions beat Grambling on Sunday, they would have been the No. 1 seed from the West. But Kelsie Sheffield’s goal in the sixth minute handed the Lady Lions their only loss in Western Division play and snapped their seven-game winning streak.
UAPB was the No. 2 seed from the West last season after dropping its regular-season finale to Grambling. The Lady Lions lost to Mississippi Valley State in the first round, 1-0.
