Thursday, November 19, 2009 11:06 PM CST

An apparent arson fire was reported at the adult probation office in the Jefferson Square Shopping Center early Tuesday morning.

Officer Brian Pickens reported that he was sent to the building at 3:57 a.m. in response to an alarm. When he arrived he found a small fire on the carpet inside the front door .

Pickens reported that he used his fire extinguisher to put out the flames through the crack in the door, then called the fire department and fire marshal.

His report said the door was black and the front room was filled with smoke. Additionally, the area smelled like gasoline and there was broken glass from a bottle on the ground.

The report indicated damage to the door and carpet was estimated at $100.

Lt. Bob Rawlinson said an investigation into the incident is continuing.
