Construction of a new library is complete at Southeast Arkansas College, the school’s president said Thursday, and the building should be open for the start of the spring semester.
Dr. Phil Shirley said the $2.75 million building will be at least twice the size of the school’s existing library. The new building still has to pass inspection, but construction fencing has been removed from the site and furniture including a circulation desk was being delivered this week.
Shirley said the new library has been “in the works” for about six years and ground was broken approximately a year ago.
“We knew we needed to have a new library very soon after we finished the (existing) library,” Shirley said.
Besides the additional space provided by the new library, it also will allow for expansion of the Allied Health and Nursing Department, which is housed in the same building as the existing library.
Once the new library is opened, the existing library will be renovated for use by the nursing department.
