Old St. James Missionary Baptist Church Scholars Ministry dedicated its Adopt-A-Spot site Nov. 8. The Pine Bluff-Jefferson County Clean and Beautiful Commission erected the Adopt-a-Spot sign.

The scholars adopted 15th and 16th avenues from Mulberry to Hickory streets, which they have been cleaning on the fourth Saturday of each month at 7:30 a.m.

Gloria Sumner, director of Clean and Beautiful, presented Brianna Beasly, scholars ministry president, with a certificate of appreciation and a metal trash grabber while Mayor Carl A. Redus Jr. encouraged the youth to participate in the city’s recycling program.

The scholars ministry is designed to encourage youth of Old St. James to envision future goals and strive toward success.

“It is good to see our youth put legs to their faith in order to reach the surrounding community,” said the Rev. David, M. Smith, pastor of Old St. James.

Thelma Cook is the scholars ministry chairperson.

“It is rewarding to see how eager the scholars are to get out on an early Saturday morning to clean up a section of Pine Bluff near our church. We are proud of them.”
