BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: BOLL WEEVILS FALL TO WESTERN CAROLINA

The Arkansas-Monticello Boll Weevils shot only 32.7 percent from the field and 50 percent from the from the foul line as they fell to the Western Carolina Catamounts 70-44 Monday in Cullowhee, N.C., as part of the College Basketball Experience Classic.
UAM (1-1) hit only 6 of 20 field goals in the first half as Western Carolina held a 30-17 advantage at the break. The Catamounts (2-1) then shot 55.2 percent in the second half to cruise to an easy victory.
Gil Verner was the only Weevil to reach double-figures in scoring, recording 14 points on 5 of 12 field goals and 3 of 9 3-pointers. UAM turned the ball over 24 times to Western Carolina’s 15.
The Catamounts had three players in double-digits, led by 17 from Harouna Mutombo. Mike Williams had 13 points while Brandon Giles had 10.
UAM continues in the CBE Classic when it plays Duquesne today at 5 p.m.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff 57
Texas Tech led from start to finish Sunday as the Lady Raiders disposed of the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Lady Lions at United Spirit Arena.
Texas Tech held a 20-point lead in the first half before UAPB (0-5) cut it to 44-27 at halftime. Then the Lady Raiders (2-1) outscored the Lady Lions 53-30 in the second half to cruise to an easy victory.
Shay Holmes led UAPB in scoring with 17 points while Jasmine Abrams had 13. Texas Tech had four plays reach double-figures, led by Ashlee Roberson’s 21 on 9-of-12 shooting from the field.
