United Way plans Power of the Purse

The United Way of Fort Smith Area will host its 13th annual Power of the Purse! from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Fort Smith Convention Center.

Guest speaker will be Betsy Allen-Manning. Tickets are $40.

Health fair set Saturday in Fort Smith

The Arkansas Minority Health Commission and the Sebastian County NAACP will host the Feria Comunal de Saldu event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Centro Comunal de Elm Grove, 1901 N. Greenwood Road. The event is open to the community and includes free health screenings and information on glucose, AIG (diabetes), colon FIT Test, cholesterol, body mass index (BMI) and more. Representatives will be on hand to answer questions, offer advice and more.

Country singer to play in Pocola

Singer-songwriter Aaron Tippin will play for a free concert at 10 p.m. Saturday at Gilley's inside Choctaw Casino, 3400 Choctaw Road in Pocola. Those attending must be 21 or older.

Van Buren Library plans October Story Time

The Van Buren Public library has scheduled Story Time themes and activities for October. Story Time is an opportunity for children to learn new stories, sing songs, make crafts, make friends and check out some books. 

Story time themes for October are:

Tuesday: Pumpkins

Oct. 10: Fire Safety

Oct. 17: Monkeys 

Oct. 24: Animal sleepover (bring your stuffed animal, you can leave it for a sleepover and pick it up anytime the next day/week) 

Oct. 31: Halloween (wear your costume) 

Story Time is free and is held at 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. at the library, 1409 Main St., Van Buren.

 

"Scare Away Hunger" during Sack Lunch fundraiser

River Valley residents will feed their need for a fun evening of entertainment by attending a special fundraiser, "Scare Away Hunger: A Benefit for the Sack Lunch Program" from 6:30-11 p.m. Oct. 26.

The event will feature dinner, dancing and a Halloween costume contest at the Fort Smith Town Club at 720 Garrison Ave. Fraternity and sorority members from the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith’s Greek life community will serve as celebrity waiters for the evening. Attendees must be 21 or older.

Tickets are $100 per person. VIP tables of 10 are also available for $1,200, which includes free champagne and a private waiter for the entire evening.

Fort Smith Library plans 'Lights, Camera, Action!' storytime

Lights, Camera, Action! A Creative Storytime will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Fort Smith Public Library, 3201 Rogers Ave. Children and their families are invited to explore literature through creative drama in this special afternoon storytime. 

Shannon Stoddard, a teacher with the Community School of the Arts will be on hand to lead the session. This month’s program will feature the books Monster Boogie and Monster Bash.
