Phyllis Marie Walker Stokes, 58, of Pine Bluff passed December 6, 2016. She was born January 29, 1958 Pine Bluff, Ark. to Melvin Lee Walker and Teresa May Young. She was the only girl of three children and also the middle child between two brothers.

Phyllis accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior in 1990 at Share-A-Prayer & Word Fellowship Church under the leadership of Pastors Joe & Juanita Miller in Pine Bluff, Ark. She served as Youth Director and a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. She loved working with young people and put her all into this ministry.

Phyllis’s parents moved the family to Chicago, Ill. and she graduated from Richard T. Crane High School in 1976. After graduating from high school, Phyllis married Carlos Stokes and to this union one child was born Michael Raheem Stokes. She continue to pursue her other dreams and goals along with writing.

After the passing of her parents, she moved back to Pine Bluff with her son Michael Raheem Stokes who was nine (9) years old in 1986. And when she returned to Arkansas from Chicago, she lived with her aunt (Sister Saint Mary) as she affectingly called her. Her aunt became a mother figure in her life and a Spiritual Mentor for her.

Phyllis quickly got a job at Gordon’s Jewelers. She loved her job, she was known for helping people get their first line of credit in that store. Although she loved the Pines Mall and the people and the community, her first love, sewing and fashion, weighed on her heart. With the help of the Lord, and family and friends she pursued her other dreams and opened her own seamstress shop –P.S. Alterations here in Pine Bluff. She loved making clothes and sewing and that was her way of still giving back to people in her community. She was GREAT AT IT! She also managed Kenwood Apartment in Pine Bluff, Ark.

The Lord continued to use her until He allowed her to pursue another dream and work in Television Ministry. She left Pine Bluff and moved to Missouri to work with the Joyce Meyers Ministries for nine years from 1999 to 2008. She worked several different positions during those years. She worked as a Call Center Representative, Switchboard Operator, Administrative Assistant, HR Recruiter and a Proofreader for the monthly magazine. Along with many other responsibilities throughout her time at JMM.

She was a member of Metro Christian Worship Center, Saint Louis, Mo. While in New York, she join The Pointe in Kingston, N.Y.

She was so faithful and loving and kind there at Joyce Meyers Ministries. When tragedy hit her personally, her job supported and helped her as she gave up her job to help with her son. She moved to Syracuse, N.Y. while her son Michael recovered.

When home calls you, she answered. She loved Pine Bluff and when Michael was well enough to travel, she bravely moved back home to her family and friends who she knew had her back. The transition was difficult, but with her faith and hard work she SMILED Her Way through It! Thought tragedy and change she kept her FAITH. Always a fighter filled with LOVE and LAUGHTER.

She later landed a job at the Pine Bluff Commercial in 2014 as a Part-time Writer, and Special Coordinator for Special Features in the Newspaper and SEA Life Magazine until her health started to decline. She kept busy writing a book, a photography business. She loved to make things beautiful and many other things she loved to do. And her Family she loved with All Her Heart. She joined First Assembly of God in Pine Bluff, Ark. She was faithful there until health begin to fail her.
