The women of UAPB fell at home to Alabama State Saturday night 74-62, with Destiny Newton scoring 19 points and Faith Ohanta chipping in 9.

Brewton, a 5-foot-7 junior guard out of Augusta, Ga., scored seven of the Golden Lions’ first nine points to keep UAPB within 10-9 at the 4:36 mark of the 1st quarter. But the Lady Hornets answered with a run over the next two minutes to push their lead to 17-10, a deficit the Lady Lions struggled to close as the game wore on.

Erin Boothe found Brewton for a backdoor layup as the first half ended 32-24 Alabama State. Brewton scored half of the Lady Lions’ points with 12.

The third quarter was unkind to the home team as a 13-point Alabama State lead with 4:22 left stretched to 17 and then 53-33 with a minute left in the period.

Brewton answered with a steal and a layup, and a 6-0 run early in the fourth quarter by the Lady Lions got them to within 55-43 with 9:15 left. Malaik Muhammad hit a three and Noe’ll Taylor scored a putback layup to cut the Alabama State lead to 66-59 with 3:12 left in the game.

But the Lions could not cut the deficit further, falling 74-62 at the final buzzer. The loss drops the Lady Lions (3-12) to 0-2 in SWAC play. On Monday they welcome Alabama A&M to Pine Bluff as conference play heats up.
